Need to rehome my silkie :( - Southeastern New Hampshire

I have a gorgeous silkie rooster named Charly that I raised from a chick. We were sure that he was a hen until he started crowing at 6 weeks, and although he started off super sweet and cuddly, he gradually became more aggressive toward my fiance. We set him up in a coop at a nearby friend's...

The Funniest / Sweetest thing(S) Your Rooster does....

Quote: This gives me hope that my roo Charly won't have too much trouble becoming accustomed to the hen house - he's been living with people for the past 4 months and hasn't interacted with another chicken since he was 2 weeks old. I'm worried that he might be aggressive with the hens since...

    Kung Fu Chickens??

If you take the hen out of the flock for a few days, won't that disrupt the pecking order even more once you put her back in?

    Inducing broodiness

Your best bet would be to raise a breed that is known for going broody. My cochins do it ALL the time... of course it sucks because I don't need them to incubate eggs for me, and they're not laying at all during that time!

    increasing production??????

Also make sure their nesting area is more cozy and comfortable for them. My chickens simply won't lay if they don't have a good place to do it, and right now two broody cochins are hogging the nesting area, so I've hardly been getting any eggs from the other hens. Can't wait to move them into...

Can roosters detect the difference in human hormones (male vs female?)

I guess this is a question for the very observant, crazy chicken enthusiasts. We have a "house silkie" named Charly who we thought was a hen until he started crowing last month. This was no problem because he was still very friendly and cuddly, but after a couple weeks he started biting, and...

    Chick Pecking other chicks!

My chickens always peck at things that are "out of place" on each other, whether that's a stray feather or a pine shaving. It's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about unless any of your chicks are wounded (because they might peck at the wounds). When I had chicks in their plastic bin...

Do Silkies remain cuddly all throughout chickenhood?

I have a two-month-old silkie chick named Charlie who who currently lives inside. I brought her home when she was 2 weeks old and she (or he?) has been an absolute sweetheart ever since. I've raised NH reds, cochins, and orpingtons, and while they are tame, they were never like Charlie. My...

White silkie & cochin bantam chicks OR eggs (Southern New Hampshire)

Hi, I'm looking for someone in the area who breeds white silkies and bantam cochins (any color). If you have a batch of chicks that just hatched I am just seeking one of each. If you don't have chicks I would be interested in buying hatching eggs, but I currently have no broody hens so the...

Keene, NH Sun. June 14th, 2009 Chickenstock @ Agway

Well, apparently I have 7 blue and black orpington bantam roos that need to find new homes, so hopefully I will have some luck at this swap. Can you believe that out of the 11 chicks I hatched, only 3 were hens?

For Sale: (MA/NH) BBS Orp Bantam Chicks (pricing question)

Well, I'd prefer pick-up, but would be open for shipping if I can't find homes for them here. I've just never done it before and would be nervous about it.

For Sale: (MA/NH) BBS Orp Bantam Chicks (pricing question)

I wanted to wait until the Chickenstock taking place next month in Keene before selling my extra chicks, but because so many of the eggs hatched, I have to find new homes for the extra chicks sooner than I anticipated; I just don't have the room for them. These guys come from show quality stock...

OMG we beat the statistics!!! :)

I just had a 100% hatch rate with shipped eggs, and it's my first time!!! You guys all had me worried 'cause I kept reading things like, "don't use expensive eggs on your first try, especially if they are shipped," "bantam orp eggs in particular are pretty sensitive to shipping," and "you're...

    What good are goats?

One thing to note between sheep and goats is the difference in intelligence. From the countless opinions I've read online about sheep (I've never actually owned them), they're pretty much the dumbest animal you can put on a farm, whereas a goat's intelligence almost and often does rival a...

ugg men and the lack there of lol

There are men out there seriously disgusted by farm life? I mean jeeze I live in a relatively rural area, but even the city boys I talk to online think I'm pretty hot stuff when I mention that I'm crazy about chickens - it makes me that much more interesting than the average bimbo they're used...

Do bantams hatch earlier than standards? Take babies after hatch?

Question: I'm incubating BBS Bantam Orpington eggs right now... do they have a tendency to hatch early as well? Should I stop turning and increase the humidity earlier than day 18? I've been keeping them at a pretty steady temp between 100.8 and 101 degrees. I also want to move them to egg...
