10 months ago we had a hen that developed what we were pretty sure was Marek's. I posted the pictures back then. She had the skin lesions/postules and looked horrible!
Fast forward to a couple of days ago. My son (he's 14) brought in a hen that is at least 5 years old. Our last EE hen. One...
SO, we had hen die from Marek's. Now the questions:
Do we have to cull the rest of the flock?
Can we use the eggs the rest of the flock is laying?
From what I've been reading the Marek's virus is everywhere and if your chickens aren't vaccinated then it's quite possible they will...
OK, after looking at that picture I totally agree that it died of Marek's. We've never had a chicken die of this before, AFAIK, in the 5 years my son has been doing this. From what I'm seeing the virus lives pretty much everywhere and this may have been a chicken that we hatched here and...
Looking at the info on feather cysts, this could be what it was. They are all coming out of a horrible molt, and it's possible this one had problems with the feathers coming thru.
No predators. Locked coop. Prior to dying my son said she was just failing and he didn't know why. He has over 30 chickens so he didn't notice it until just before she died. Yes, I thought that looked like a maggot too but I don't know how since it's the middle of winter here yet and...
One of my son's chickens died a few days ago. This is what he found when he was taking her out of the coop. We have no idea what this is and we need the experts here to diagnose it. The bumps are the size of peas.
My son found a dead chicken in the coop a couple of days ago. The bumps that you see where the feathers should have been were the size of peas. Can you tell me if this looks familiar to any of you? We don't use antibiotics in our coop and we're really hoping this isn't anything contagious...
So my son is doing a new 4H project. He's done pigs (and will continue to do them), geese, rabbits and of course the chickens which he still does. He's earned enough money from selling the chicks and eggs to buy a couple of angora goats. I'm not having any luck finding a great forum like at...
So I bought a 10 oz pkg of corid powder. It makes 125 gallons. 4oz makes 50 gallons. I need to make it 1 gallon at a time. How much powder do I need, in teaspoon measure?
I can't believe I can't convert this. I'm an accountant for heaven's sake. I think my brain is fried today.
After school ds snuck in to check. One baby out and fluffy, one egg pipping! The daddy almost bit him and mama wasn't much happier but he got to hold the chick for a few seconds. Cute little bugger.
Not gonna bug her again for another 24 hours.
Last night ds snuck in and checked and one of the eggs was pipping. Mama was making a real racket so we knew something was up.
This is amazing considering what she has been thru. After the wind blew her house around and knocked around her eggs we thought sure this was a bust but she still has...
So this hen has been sitting on her nest for 3+ weeks. Last week 3 tornados touched down 2 miles from here. Twice we've had tornado warnings and winds of 60+mph. All the time she has sat on her next in a calf hutch just fine.
2 nights ago we had gusty winds at night. Must have been just the...
I use washable crayola markers. I make a circle all the way around the egg with a bright color so that no matter how they are laying I can tell its a setter.
