I have an EE that's about 10 weeks old now or thereabout. A while back, her brooder mates picked out all of her back feathers and that was horrible. She healed up from that and ever since, we've been trying to get the other chickens to accept her. We've done the thing where we section her off...
Boooo! I dislike this thread now. lol
I got her sexed, too, so I didn't think a thing of it until tonight. You know how you just kind of get used to looking at your birds? I hadn't noticed the giant comb or red wattles. Blah. I really didn't want to have to start a new chick but I'll...
I spotted those tonight, too and they're pretty red, not just regular pink. Hm. I'm worried.
ETA: She suddenly got really aggressive tonight toward the others which made me think twice about her pullethood. lol
Be careful of Ebayers. My mom used to work for a lady who Ebayed, too. She used to sell food grade DE and fill her bags with the stuff from the hardware store. Shady, shady, shady.
If I found him another home, I wouldn't want for it to happen to that person's chickens, too. I'm thinking his new home might just be 3 feet in the ground. I don't know...
I put him back in with the others, even the injured one. And I have to add that I'm not even 100% sure that it's him...
I thought it would be worth adding that this happened a couple of days after changing their bedding to sand. Is it possible that he filled up on sand and stopped eating his feed? I switched back to pine and he's eating his feed. He's isolated right now, btw.
It's possible that they're a little cramped. They need to be out in the coop/run during the day but we hit a snag. If they have more room, could he be saved? He's shown NO signs of aggression so far. He's always been the sweetest of the group. The one he attacked is the one that let him...
Your chicks are absolutely adorable! I read about sand and switched over in my brooders but a couple days later, one of my chicks went cannibal on me. Later, I read that that's common with sand in the brooder. Honestly, I don't think sand is worth it. Finding one of your precious chicks all...
Or her. Don't know yet. I posted about my 4 week old GLW going cannibal on one of my 6 week old EE's. He/she tore out her back feathers and then started going for meat. Her back is a mess and I can tell that she's in some pain. I've cleaned it, sprayed Blue Kote on it but the other chicks...
Ok, so last night, I washed her up, smeared her down with Neosporin (a light covering) and kept her separated from the rest.
She'll be fine. My big question is what do I do with the one who did this? Should he be culled? I do not trust him since the minute I took the injured one away, he...
