    Buckeye eye problem

There was a slight wheeze to her breathing when I first brought her inside but I think the panic of being caught and carried for the first time in 10 months (she's my wild golden eagle) might have had something to do with that. I gave her a few antibiotic drops I had on hand and will track down...

    Buckeye eye problem

I'm going to bring her in at dark to flush it and start antibiotic drops. I wouldn't be surprised if it is from an injury. Bucky is the lowest of the flock and gets pecked at all the time. She's 11 months old and has never squatted or laid an egg. Other than injury are there any thoughts on...

    Midnight murders

That's what I was thinking too. I've seen evidence of racoons in the yard before, handprints in the water dish and on one of my maple sap collection jugs last winter. I only asked about weasels because a friend of mine a few miles from here is having trouble with them and suggested it. The hunt...

    Midnight murders

Long, long story short, I found three birds this morning. One was only scattered feathers and a small section of vertebrae. Two were decapitated. What do you think I'm setting traps for? What, in Virginia, would slip a gap in a chain link fence (we have a 3' bird netting extension on the upper...

    Crusty lower beak?

I have a two month old austrolorp with a light brown crust on both sides of the beak, under the top edge. I saw it yesterday and figured the bird is just a messy eater that enjoyed an avocado I gave them but the crust is still there this morning. Any thoughts?

    Cull them all...?

I wasn't thinking of doing the whole flock, just the four little ones. Well, now three since I did the silkie this morning. I'm going to continue antibiotics and observations on the others.

    Cull them all...?

I have 3 laying hens, 10 two month olds, and four three week olds in the brooder. Of the babies one silkie has had a crusty eye from the start. I only saw the foam once, until this morning when it was back in full force. The chick is smaller than the others, feathers not as developed. I haven't...

    EYP - meat ok?

You also do a much neater job of it. I made one skin-deep poke and woosh. :hu I wish I had taken pictures of everything but I was trying to be done and cleaned up before my 11 and 6 year old sons got home from school. I really do appreciate the help in trying to pinpoint what happened. At...

    EYP - meat ok?

It wasn't as watery. If I ate runny eggs it would have looked like something to mop up with toast.

    EYP - meat ok?

That's what the cheese looked like. However everything was much more gray. I guess there was cancer in addition to the EYP. I just barely nicked the skin and yolk poured out.

    EYP - meat ok?

I 'm not sure if the cheese was attached to the intestines or not. I just plopped it in the bucket. I don't recall seeing any loose cheese.

    EYP - meat ok?

Very little fat in her. The viscera was grayish-pink with cottage cheese type curds on it.

    EYP - meat ok?

See? This is why I asked. I had no previous experience in this and nothing to compare it to. After the responses here and describing the state of the bird's innards to a friend of mine I have discarded the bird. Thanks.

    EYP - meat ok?

I culled and butchered a bird with egg yolk perionitis yesterday and need to know if the meat is ok? She didn't smell of infection. She was not on antibiotics. Thanks.

Is the meat ok? *processed bird pic*

You nailed it. Yolk peritonitis. http://www.theveterinaryexpert.com/backyard-poultry/egg-yolk-peritonitis/ She had every symptom. Poor bird. Her egg quality began to go downhill about four months ago. I noticed her becoming pale and withdrawn. Her feathers were always hard and dirty, but I...

Is the meat ok? *processed bird pic*

Emotionally, yes. Since my town does not allow slaughter in town limits I had to be very discreet. I set up the cone in the shed. There was a bucket underneath lined in a black trash bag. I pulled that up between the cone and the wall a bit to keep splatter contained. In my kitchen I had the...

Is the meat ok? *processed bird pic*

Thanks! Into the pot she goes! I definitely have heavier, more full-figured birds. I was comparing yesterday's hen to my other amberlink. The picture above was two days ago. Dumpling (on right) is a lot more substantial across the breast in comparison to Parma. I feel bad now that I let her go...

Is the meat ok? *processed bird pic*

I culled a two year old hen today that hasn't laid an entire egg (or even a yolk) in about 7 weeks. She was my first intentional, planned kill. I made mistakes and learned for next time. Anyway, after defeathering her I noticed just how scrawny she was. I mean, just look at the picture...

    Chickens eating another

Try to give the chicks some sort of approved activities to give them something to do besides eat each other. My chick pen is a touch small for my 10. It has netting across the top so I give them branches of varying heights and thicknesses to climb, roost and play on. One is even a swing. They...
