Ducks too fat? How do I tell?

Fastest to waddle towards food yes... and fat enough to shove everyone else out of the way. :P Her husband is about the same age as her... and he's a skinny boy compared to her.

    Keeping the turf alive

Reporting back... in this drought (hardly any rain in 4 months) the duck area of the backyard is actually the only lush green part. :D I move their enclosure once a week and use the water from the kiddy pool to water it. So all good.

Ducks too fat? How do I tell?

I was concerned my pekin is too fat... reading some of these posts reassured me that she's probably just a healthy plus sized lady.

    Duck and chickens - intro

Found 3 eggs this morning! Two chicken eggs and one duck egg... yay! I think we have a lift off, production line operating at full capacity.

    Keeping the turf alive

I moved their enclosure away from the trashed area... I hope they don't trash another part of the backyard or I swear to god we're gonna have crispy duck for dinner pronto. I had to hose and scrub down the house. For lack of a better description they must have gone nuts today and humped and dug...

    Keeping the turf alive

Okay... I'm going to report on recent developments. Everything was fine this week... until today. I was happy to see that the turf didn't suffer too much. There were two minor holes in the turf - duck work. We were away for the weekend and our friend fed the animals, locked them in and let them...

    Duck and chickens - intro

...was mud on the walls of the house 1 metre high, mud on the doors, mud on the window, entire ground area soaking wet, giant holes dug up everywhere, **** everywhere... my dear husband was initially shocked when he saw and then lost the plot. It's kind of funny but not really  looks...

    Keeping the turf alive

I'm relatively new to having chickens. We live in a densely populated inner city suburb on a 600m2 block of land with a new house and subtropical landscaping. My hens have a hen house where they sleep at night and during the day they can roam around the area in front of their coop. I fenced off...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

I found our first egg this morning... after a week of tolerating mad chicken behaviour.

    Duck and chickens - intro

We got our first egg this morning... tiny egglet from one of the chickens, I think I know which one :D

Moody and loud before laying first egg?

That explains the madness we had in the last 2 weeks... one of the chickens was ultra cranky & loud. This morning, all quiet & peaceful and behold the glory there was a tiny egglet in the nest box.

    Duck and chickens - intro

I think we have a match made in heaven... Donald paired up with his ducky (that was quick!), they waddle around together and the chooks keep to themselves. There's a bit of quacking, clucking and chattering going on in the mornings when I let them out and in the evenings just before the sun goes...

    Duck and chickens - intro

That's the plan... get Donald a matching companion so he focuses on her, and they hopefully both settle in. Alternative is to rehome both of them as a pair. I let them out this morning and they are relatively quiet, apart from occasional quacking. The lady duck had some blood on her nose this...

    Duck and chickens - intro

My flock is now 5-6 months old... and surprise surprise - the duck turned out to be a MALE, no doubt about it, so renamed him to Donald. All seemed good and he got along well with the chickens. A friend built me a coop designed specifically for Donald with a flat ramp so it's easy for him to...

    Duck and chickens - intro

My duck & chooks are now 3 months old and live in the backyard. I fenced off part of it to keep them off the patio but they seem to find a way around it and go on a poop-a-thon :) Overall I'm very glad I got them and looking forward to them starting to lay. New coop is also under construction. I...

    Critique my coop design

That would turn into an addiction for me... baby ducklings are too cute. Also the city council doesn't allow cockerels. How big are your nest boxes?

    Critique my coop design

Please excuse if the questions about nest boxes are stupid... I have no idea how egg laying works. If I only had chickens - would I need a nest box for each chicken or would 2 chickens share a nest? Similarly, if I only had ducks, would two ducks share a nest? Or do I need a nest box for each...

    Critique my coop design

At the moment I use a combination of 2.5L waterer and a basin for water. The duck loves the basin of course and she "washes" her food in it. I'm a bit careful with the basin though, cause I nearly had one of the chooks drown in it a couple of days ago. I think the way to go in the future will be...

    Critique my coop design

At the moment the duck follows the chickens... so if they go inside, she follows them, if she wants to hide, she'll run up the ramp. Clumsy when going up, tumbles when going down. Current ramp is too narrow and too steep for her. If I make the ramp slope at a more suitable angle and wider I...

    Critique my coop design

I'm new to the world of ducks and chickens. I bought 2 chickens (isa brown) and a pekin duckling a couple of weeks ago. They're growing and I now moved them outside, where I placed a coop and built them a run. The coop was purchased from ebay and was really really cheap... which is proving to be...
