She's not moving around too much, not eating much and she has these jerking motions with her neck. Her comb is flopped over too. Her chest seems really swollen and she fell off balance when she went to itch her nose. Her eyes seem swollen too. I just put electrolytes and probiotic in their water...
She's only a year old. Could explain why I've only been getting 5 eggs a day lately when I have 6 chickens though. Weird. Is there anything I should be doing if it is a hormone imbalance?
We live in MA and the land out behind our house is pretty damp which makes a perfect storm for an insane amount of Mosquitos. Before we had chickens we would spray the yard with fogger. One year we even split a mosquito control service with our neighbor. Both methods were really effective. Now...
We just got 3 chicks to add to our current flock of 6.
Our big girls:
Buff Orpingtons- Margo, Edith, Agnes
Ri reds - Gerti, Lucy, and Camilla.
The chicks are:
Black australorps - Penny & Pepper
Buff Wyandotte - Wonder Chicken (named by my 8 year old son)
Hello! I just got 2 BA chicks today. They are the first australorps we've ever had. I noticed that one chick has an almost completely black beak and the other one's beak is all white except for 1 small black spot. Will their beaks stay like this or will the white beaked one change to black?
I noticed today that one of my 1 year old Buff Orpington's was just not acting like herself. She was off by herself instead of staying with the flock. Her comb looks a dull pink and she seems to stand still and stare off into space for a while before she slowly moves around. She would eat meal...
We have our buff orpington in our basement in a dog crate with a bandaged foot. She's got a bad infection in her toe and is currently on antibiotics.
The issue is she can't get up on the roosting bar we put in there for her so she's just laying on the bottom of the crate (which she's also...
I'm getting 3 new chicks in early May (well summer, black copper maran, and a barred rock). We already have a flock of 6.
3 buff orps and 3 ri reds. I have a temporary run already for the 3 new girls that will go right along side our large run, but what can I use for a coop until they're big...
How high can they jump straight up? Or should I put in different height bars so they can jump from one to the next?
Every time I have ever checked on them at night they are all sleeping close together lined up on the low roosting bar. They've never pooped in the roosting boxes so far.
I didn't plan to leave the pop door open because I thought that would be too drafty since it's below their roost. The roosting bar we have is only about 6" off the floor. That's just how it was in the coop plans. Should we have a higher one? I like the idea of drilling some holes in the gable...
Here's a pic of my coop. I was just going to leave the tops of the 2 windows cracked a few inches on each side throughout the winter. I have 6 hens in there now and plan to add a few more in the spring. Are the 2 windows enough ventilation or do I need to add more?
My 7 year old really wants to hatch some chicks (and so do I), but we absolutely cannot keep a rooster in my neighborhood. Is there any way to sex a fertilized egg? I'm 99% sure the answer is no, but I'm asking anyway out of desperation. Lol.
I think I want to add light. Now I just need to read up on how to safely hang a light in the coop so I don't cause a fire or have any of them get hurt.
