    Beak color in Black Australorp Chicks

    Hello! I just got 2 BA chicks today. They are the first australorps we've ever had. I noticed that one chick has an almost completely black beak and the other one's beak is all white except for 1 small black spot. Will their beaks stay like this or will the white beaked one change to black?

    My husband added another roosting bar this afternoon. It's about 4'. A few have gone up there and a few have stayed down low so far.

    How high can they jump straight up? Or should I put in different height bars so they can jump from one to the next? Every time I have ever checked on them at night they are all sleeping close together lined up on the low roosting bar. They've never pooped in the roosting boxes so far.

    Here's a pic of my coop. I was just going to leave the tops of the 2 windows cracked a few inches on each side throughout the winter. I have 6 hens in there now and plan to add a few more in the spring. Are the 2 windows enough ventilation or do I need to add more?

    Want to hatch some chicks, but cannot have a rooster.

    My 7 year old really wants to hatch some chicks (and so do I), but we absolutely cannot keep a rooster in my neighborhood. Is there any way to sex a fertilized egg? I'm 99% sure the answer is no, but I'm asking anyway out of desperation. Lol.

    I think I want to add light. Now I just need to read up on how to safely hang a light in the coop so I don't cause a fire or have any of them get hurt.
