    Rear bleeding-Help

I have three of my chickens that are bleeding from the rear just recently. One, a couple of days ago and now two more today. There have not been any blood smears on their eggs. My rooster has recently been very aggressive toward the girls, could he be the cause, or is there something else...

Effects of a Rooster on Eggs and Egg Laying?

I have read or heard conflicting information about having a rooster in the flock? Can we clarify these questions? 1. Does a fertile egg really taste or look different? Blood spot, etc.? 2. Does a rooster affect the laying rate. I have heard that it will make them lay better, and that it...

Do I really have enough room in my coop??

Wow, I just looked at the pictures again. I must have been in my own world. It will probably be good for the summer because they will spend a lot of time outside, but I worry about being cramped in the winter. I do not know how I missed the dimensions. Maybe you can do something like they do...

Do I really have enough room in my coop??

I bet you will be fine on the size too. I have a larger coop and all of the girls end up cramming themselves together on one roost and ignore the other three. If you are worried about room in the coop for a feeder, you could do something like this that has been circulating on pinterest and...

    Privett hatchery

The schools in the area generally get their eggs to hatch from Privett. Some years, they did great, and others, not so much. I think the main problem was with the teachers and not the eggs though. I do feel your pain about their sexing. I think they have too many misses in their pullet runs...

    Anyone near Clovis, NM?

The tornado the first day was about two miles north of us. Just barely missed us. The second day it was about 10-15. God definitely had his hand over Clovis. It looks like we may get some more today looking at radar, but not as bad. The hail was huge. Softball size in some areas North of...

    Is this normal?

I had some of the same concerns. Mine that were a couple of week older did the same thing. I made sure there was food in the coop and run and that there was room for them to get away. I can gladly say that they have been chilling out with each other for a week or so now and all seem to be...

    Breed Recommendations for a newbie

I did not read all of the posts, but I am a newbie too. I was given some and I personally bought some. There is a huge difference in the temperament of the ones I had been given. The ones that I took care of, fed, watered, and handled will come right to me and are very gentle. The ones that...

Mixing Chicks that are a week different in age

I am in the same situation. I have 3 sets, all different ages, that are all in it together. The larger ones pick on the littler ones a bit, but each set sticks together and they find their own areas. It is funny to see how they segregate. I am sure the pecking order will reestablish once...

    Too Drafty?

I worried about that too. I have a thermometer that monitors the temp inside and outside of the coop. The tree really helps, and I have a mister in the area that cools it down, but does not make the ground wet.

    Too Drafty?

The pickets are butted right next to each other. If anything it is maybe a 1/16-1/18 inch gap with they may have been slightly warped. By really cold, there are times we get to 10-20 degrees, but only for generally a few days at a time. The coop itself is 8x8 square with the nest boxes not...

    Too Drafty?

I live in Eastern NM and built my coop with old pickets pushed flush together. There are some gaps here and there, but I had read that there should be ventilation. I concluded this will suffice. In the winter it can get really cold for 3-4 days, but can then warm back up to 50's-60's during...

Feed in the the Run? Coop? or both?

I just wondered if keeping the feed near the nest boxes will cause them to not use them, or if it really mattered. Is it also better if they get used to feeding outside of the coop unless it is bad weather, or does that really matter either?

Handsome, friendly young roosters need safe homes and are not for dinner!

I am in the same boat. I have two that are also available in Eastern NM or West TX. Post your location and maybe there is someone close.

Feed in the the Run? Coop? or both?

I have searched and not found what I am really wanting to know. I am fairly new to all of this and trying to figure it all out. Right now I have my coop with boxes in the back. I have the feed and water near the boxes to avoid it being under my roosts and getting messed up. The nest boxes...

    Roos or Not???

Any idea on what breed the white one is?

    Roos or Not???

The top two pictures are #1 The next two pictures are #2 and the white one is #3. The reds were bought at TSC as red pullets and the white one was inherited because someone bought chickens as a "cute" gift that was not really wanted.

    Roos or Not???

Number 1 and 2 are about 7-8 weeks old and number 3 is probably 5-6 weeks old. What do you think. I am not sure I want one rooster, but definitely not 3 .
