I've been fighting both my chicken flocks for several weeks now in their refusal to eat their feed. I thought maybe there was something wrong with the bag i had at first, but now we've tried 3 different brands and they refuse them all. One coop will suffer through and eat about 1/3-1/2 of...
Thanks. I know 1 family around who has goats so i will ask what they use for wormer. I still want the vet out to give a tetanus shot and give them a good looksy i just might have to wait a bit longer than i planned. I'm hoping for October and November breedings so i have some time for the vet...
Great, thanks. I will do that as soon as she gets here.
Just out of curiosity, we had something unplanned and very expensive come up today with another of our animals that will require surgery later in the week. Would it be worth giving a pelleted wormer to the goat's when they get here and...
Thanks so much. I found a pdf from Cornell that shows what levels our loose vitamins should contain. I'm going to take that with me to the store when i go so i can find something appropriate. We're only about 1.5-2 hrs from Cornell so they're info should be good for us. It's also the place...
Thanks so much. I got a different book yesterday and it talked a lot more about mineral deficiencies and i'm betting it's the copper, too. One of my books said they were sensitive to it, another didn't even address minerals at all, and the third had quite a bit of info. I will see if our TSC...
We are getting our first goat's and being new to goat's i have a question about one of them. She's a nice Oberhasli doe, giving lots of milk, but her coat is a bit rough compared to the other 2 we are taking as well. Our friends we're getting her from said she was fine till she ate a bunch of...
Yeah i don't do long unless it can be picked apart easily. Our grass clippings are short, like 1.5-2 inches is all, so those are ok. Isn't the rule keep it 3" or less? The weeds i feel like they're ok with only because i have watched them eating them and they're picking off individual leaves...
I have been feeding my hens the weeds from our garden-they're unsprayed. They like them since it gives them something to pick through as well as a snack. Is there any harm in doing this long term though? My girls don't get to free range due to predators so this makes a free entertainment...
They're awesome! I wish they were all like these guys. They even put themselves in the coop as evening approaches or when they get chilly. They're not afraid of the mower or kids or anything normal in our yard. You have to push them out of the way many times to do things in their area. They...
Voice sexing hasn't worked so far. These Crested's are so friendly that they do not protest at all when handled. There is one who quacks her head off and sounds just like our older Cayuga girls so i assume that one is also female. All the others are silent when handled-little stinkers. They...
Thanks a lot. I'll do some snooping around here later and see what i find for more info. There's probably not a lot more i can do except i do know i'll be using a different hatchery next time for several reasons so maybe that will help some with future birds. I have 3 different batches of...
We've lost a few hens over the past few months and our local vet couldn't find anything so she finally had me send one of them to Cornell to have a full exam done. Everything that they tested for was clean which is great-that means my girls are healthy. But they did find that particular bird...
I'm still waiting to see what my straight run TSC ducklings will be and i can't find an age in my books. How old should they be before i'm sure of what they are? I'm starting to get excited that i might have actually gotten 5 out of 6 females which would just be the greatest luck ever for me...
Great info. Now i won't get so worked up when i get a little behind on getting them in the fridge. Sometimes life gets too hectic and it might be 3, 4, or even 5 days before i get to them and i used to toss the one's that were 5 days old but i won't anymore. I'm also going to stop buying...
I have lost another hen today. The first two were a few months ago and the vet couldn't find any cause of death but they did have mites which we've been treating for since. This hen displayed the same symptoms as the first two and she had been treated for mites. But we have a major problem...
Our neighbors have lost almost all their ducks to hawks. They finally had to pen them with wire over the top even. In my experience even if you don't see many hawk's now they will start coming more if there's food around and once they get one bird they will keep coming back for more.
I'll mention this to hubby as we're planning things. We have so much clay in the soil here it's nuts so drainage is basically impossible. I kept seeing concrete in my books and magazines so that's why we were thinking of that route. Maybe concrete paver blocks with sand and such on top would...
That's what I was thinking might happen. We're going to try to separate them if at all possible keeping the Mallard drakes with their current ladies which are also Mallards along with Cayuga's and Swedish's. Then the new one's can just stay together-just hoping we don't have too mane drakes...
We limit their pool to only about 4" deep and only during hot weather so most breeding takes place on dry land. I will keep this in mind though when they get their new home for sure.
