Designing Home For Some Spring Chicks

If you are planning to use sheet goods (plywood or OSB) for the walls and floor, I would increase the size to 4" x 8". This would reduce the amount of waste and give you more room for just a little more money. Paul

Worried eggs will freeze in the winter

I built roll out boxes with the eggs rolling to the back of the box which is accessible from the entrance/storage area of the coop. The eggs end up in a closed in box with a door for egg collection and light bulbs to keep them from freezing. The light bulbs are on a timer that shuts them off...

Water Heaters!!!! Are they really worth it??

OP.....no, the nipples don't freeze. The plunger inside the nipple is made of stainless steel, so the warmth from the water transfers through the nipple. Paul

Water Heaters!!!! Are they really worth it??

My setup is similar to Jmagill. I use a bucket heater in a 5 gallon bucket with 3 nipples. The heater has a built in thermostat so it only comes on when the water is about 35 degrees...

How long can hens safely go without water??

I accidently closed one of my hens in a shed for 11 days with no food or water. When I opened it she came out and pecked at the ground like nothing happened. I know it was 11 days because that's how long she had been missing. Paul

Need HELP with large coop design

I think I would eliminate the hallway, and put the hen section on the left wall and the storage in the middle. That would mean the entry door would be on the bottom of your sketch, and you can eliminate one, or both, doors on the top. A hallway seems like a waste of valuable space. I would...

chicken ramp ending short of ground?

My ramp goes all the way to the ground, but the chickens usually jump/fly to the middle of the ramp which is about 18" off the ground at that point. My brother just has a little landing porch about 4 feet off the ground with no ramp. The pop hole is surrounded with sheet metal to foil climbing...

    The Paddy Wagon

Wow, a lot of thought and work went into that. Nicely done. 2x6's with 3/4" floor does sound like a bit of overkill, but maybe you're younger than me. The big wheels will make it a lot easier to move around. Good job! Paul

    Drinking water

Last summer one of my hens followed me into the grandkids playhouse and I accidently closed her in. I went back in the playhouse 11 days later and she just walked out and started pecking the ground like nothing happened. I know it was 11 days because I looked up the date that I texted my wife...

Will chickens lay without any nesting material in the box?

Mine do fine in roll out boxes with mats that I got from Cutler Supply. It's similar to astro turf, but has holes that make it easy to rinse off. They are available from various poultry suppliers.

    Criticize My Coop!

If you're planning on moving your coop around or opening it up much, I would not use solid core doors. Hollow core doors are much lighter and will provide all the structural strength you need. Damaged doors can usually be found at home centers quite reasonably. Paul

Do you sell cleaned eggs or as is?

Dagirls....I got it on line. I bought a gallon, but in hindsight, I should have bought a smaller amount. It goes a long, long way. I don't know if the enzymes grow or what, but there is a slimy algae stuff forming in it. I've had it about a year and a half, kept at room temp. I emailed the Egg...

Do you sell cleaned eggs or as is?

I use an enzyme wash on all my eggs. I keep the dirty ones separate as I collect them, and pre wash them with warm water and a plastic scrunchy type pad. Then they all go into one of those green plastic coated wire baskets and into a 5 gallon bucket with "Egg Washer Pro" in warm water and a...

    Nipple watering system...

I tried several methods, and what worked best for me is a 5 gallon bucket with lid and 3 nipples in the bottom. Keeping the lid on allows you to hang the bucket from a chain without deforming the bucket or getting dirt/poop inside. The chain allows you to raise or lower the bucket, depending on...

Nipple watering system within main water line

Adding a valve does not reduce the pressure. It can only reduce the flow rate. Pressure can be reduced by adding a regulator or lowering the height of the storage tank. Pressure at the nipple is determined by the vertical distance between the nipple and the top of the water in the tank...

    Opinions on Chick food brands

I've had good luck with Armada feed. It's cheaper than Purina and it's made just a few miles from where you live, Armada MI. Paul

    chicken nipples

Yikes, that's $53 for chicken nipples that you didn't get. How many are you looking for? Maybe I could just buy some and send them to you. I've never sent a package to Israel (I'm in Michigan, USA) but it shouldn't cost too much. I can check with the post office tomorrow. Your question...

Ok. Totally sold on using DE... How do people apply?

I use an 8 cup flour sifter. I fill it twice for a 10' x 12' area of Deep Litter. My plan was to do this once a month, but it hasn't seemed to need it that much. Paul
