    Hen's earlobe swollen?

My one and only hen Gertie just finished molting, and started looking pretty again, but now I'm a little worried as it seems that her earlobe is swollen or enlarged. It doesn't seem to bother her, and she is okay with me touching it, but it is a lot lighter than the other one (more pink than...

    Chicken ate herbicide?

I just went outside to put my RIR who was out foraging back into her coop because my father informed me that he had just started laying out some herbicide in the yard. Of course I freaked because my chook isn't the brightest when it comes to what is food and what isn't. She could tell I was...

Missing one of my hens (and I only own two!) D:

I hadn't thought of her going broody! Maybe... I never saw ANY feathers or chicken remains. But it has been several days and I haven't seen her anywhere near the coop for food or water... and we have so many predators out here, that if she is anywhere outside the yard it seems highly unlikely...

A new companion for my lonely 2 year old RIR?

So one of my girls just went missing. I'm guessing a hawk got her. Now the other one (Gertie) is alone in her coop. I've decided that free-range is no longer a good idea if predators know where to come to get a free meal. I'm thinking about getting one or two new chooks but idk what kind to...

Missing one of my hens (and I only own two!) D:

I have/had two sweet RIRs that are free-range. We have LOTS of predators around here, but we've NEVER had any problems so far. The only close call we've had was a hawk (that was smaller than both the chickens) sitting on top of their coop one morning when I went to let them out. But I always...

How long does it take a hen to lay?

Interesting... I was wondering because I wanted to put my two girls in their run, but Windsor hadn't laid her morning egg yet. When I went to get them, she was in her box clucking away. Didn't want to move her... didn't want her laying an egg in the run. So I came inside, posted this question...

How long does it take a hen to lay?

I'm not talking about how long it takes their bodies to make the eggs, just how long it takes them to lay after they sit down in the nesting box and start trying to lay.

    Piano Players!

Me! Me! I've played for 6 years, and have made a superior (the highest rating) or higher (yes that is possible lol) in all six competitions I've played in. Hate to brag, but there's no other way to tell someone but to tell them. It's a LOT of work to compete though, and I'm thinking about...

    Completely liquid poo?

Wow... never in my life have I been more excited and disgusted at the same time. Haha, that was incredibly helpful Tiramisu! Thanks a bunch. The poo I was worried about was definitely the "watery" variety. It has been extremely hot and even more humid here lately, and I'm sure they've both been...

    Completely liquid poo?

Good to know about the feed... I haven't bought them any grit yet, so maybe they need some? Sometimes their poo looks like runny squished tomatoes. Doesn't look bloody, but redish and gooey. I've seen some normal poo but mostly the other kind.

    Completely liquid poo?

Ok so I got my two laying RIR girls last week, and they've had really runny poo. Thought it was just from stress and that it would get better soon. I've been feeding then crushed layer feed, and plenty of scraps... zucchini, squash, tomatoes... they had been free range before I got them, and now...

    Feeding layers chick feed?

Awesome. Is there anything else that supplies a tangible amount of calcium? Again, I'd have to make a trip down to the feed store for oyster shells. (But I'll certainly get them once I get some layer feed.) I'm so excited about my chooks!

    Feeding layers chick feed?

Ok so I'm going to pick up my first 2 RIRs tomorrow, and I thought I was buying some younger pullets, but it turns out that they are layers. I've already bought a small (5 lb) bag of medicated chick starter feed. Would it be alright to go ahead and let them eat this until I can get over to...

How many chicks will these coops hold?

Alright, so how about if I had 4 by 8 day run? Would it be okay then to have say 6 or 7 chickens?

How many chicks will these coops hold?

Hello hello fellow chicken crazy people! (My first post!) My question is, how many chickens will these two coops hold? 69.5" Width, 33.75" Depth, 50" Height - 2 removable roosts 64" Width, 43.5" Depth, 55.25" Height - 3 removable roosts They're about the same size so I'm guessing they'll hold...
