Hi all,
Can a wry neck be caused by an attack from other hens? My dominant hen, a 5-year-old EE, was visciously attacked by a group of 2-year-old hens when she went into a molting funk. Since then, she has been cowering and confused. Her neck has been slowly twisting and today her head is...
I've been treating a hen and chicks for what appears to be quill lice, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I keep finding the critters on the feathers. I'm basically catching the frantic birds and shaking the can of permethrin dust on them and quickly rubbing it into the feathers. Should...
My Cochin hen has a case of either lice or mites (can they be white?) crawling on the spines of her abundant feathers. Some of her mixed breed batch of four-week-old chicks are showing them on their feathers as well.
I've treated the hen with Permethrin-based poultry dust twice this week and...
I had an EE chick that I swore was a rooster last year... she was so much bigger and imposing looking than her "sisters." She also seemed to have a bit more comb development. I posted pix and got mixed opinions, but I honestly wasn't sure what she was until the day she laid a huge green egg...
Where I live we don't have a TSC close by, so I found something on the TSC website called Y-Tec Garden and Poultry dust. Is this what you were talking about? It seems to have the permethrin (sp?) in it in powder form. Believe it or not, I found that Amazon.com has it for $6.00 plus shipping...
My daughter has a standard Blue Cochin who has been broody since late April, and we've tried every trick we know of to break her of the habit. Now, she's developed a bad case of bird lice. We tried bathing her today in soapy water, but that didn't do much. We're completely frustrated with her...
Another thing I would be aware of is how the other chickens are reacting to his injuries. Sometimes, if a bird is injured the others will peck at the blood or even exposed skin. My friend's injured hen was attacked mercilessly by other gals in the coop. She removed the patient into the house...
I had a chick hatch early once with its yolk sac still outside. It didn't live more than an hour or so. I imagine your poult will pass away in short order. It's probably not worth the trauma of putting it out of its misery, as it will do so very quickly on its own.
So sorry.
OK, the honey water is doing the trick. I dipped her beak in it and she looked surprised and then took five or six good drinks by herself! thanks again, threehorses!
Keep in mind that the books and the movie are both great, but there are some differences. The books are much more complete and the detail is amazing. Tolkien worked on the books for decades before they were actually published. Also, keep in mind that The Hobbit started out as a story for...
If anyone needs a bit of a LOTR hit while waiting for The Hobbit to be released, try checking out the amateur British movie (40minutes long) "The Hunt for Gollum." You can google it and download to watch. It' shockingly good for an amateur production.
BTW, Jackson ruined Faramir, one of...
Thanks for the photo advice! I NEVER would have remembered all that!
OK, brace yourself... here's poor Violet. I know, it gives ya the WILLIES! To be fair, I should post one of her before the disaster. The poor wee thing.
I'm a huge Tolkien admirer, too. I've read them almost every year since I was in high school. I'm an ex high school English teacher (now, I'm homeschooling my own three hobbits). The funny thing about the books is that the more you read them, the more there is to discover. They're much...
Gibbychicks, good luck with your RIR! I can't believe this condition is that rare. An earlier poster said production breeds like RIRs often drop their feathers quickly. (Strangely, mine is just a lowly bantam Light Brahma.) Not much to her. The mash in the above post seems to be helping.
