which breeds of Maran lay the really dark eggs. I have two cuckoos, but their eggs aren't that deep chocolatey brown that I had hoped for... more like a cafe au lait brown
Hello All,
I'm trying to find someone or someplace that sells chicks in the Austin area, outside of the typical production varieties; not necessarily rare, but since I own chickens for their companionship and beauty, I like having interesting breeds and am not interested in their egg laying...

Has anyone found a good replacement for Hill Country Poultry? Ever since they went out of business, I haven't been able to find any places that carry more than just basic breeds of chicks. I'm not looking for super rare varieties, but they used to have all kinds that no one else seems to...
Oh My God... I've been going nuts worrying about my little pullet and she has EXACTLY the same thing as your chicken. As soon as I saw the picture, I recognized it. Same symptoms too: not herself, never comes for treats anymore, still active enough but has gotten a little thinner.
Please...
I know this was a really long time ago, but on the off-chance that you had any developments, could you tell me what they were. One of my most favorite ameraucana pullets has a huge scab right next to her keel about three quarters of an inch thick, and I'm thinking this may be what it is. It's so...
If you're interested, I'll let you know how things progress...
I have treated her with Ivermectin as well as a couple of other birds who have 'face crusties', some of which seem to be going into the ear holes. No one is acting very ill so far.
I have a little hen with exactly the same crusts you've described. All of my chickens have been scratching their heads like mad and are undergoing a scaly leg treatment, but only one has actual crusts on her face. Have you seen any improvements or did you ever figure out what was wrong?
Well, it's been a few days...
If anyone's interested, orley is about the same. Yesterday I investigated her throat and saw a yellow, hard looking mass (it looked like caseous exudate from the pictures I've seen) close to her larynx.
Today, however, it's gone... Good news I guess? I swabbed her...
Hey all,
I am currently Living in Austin Texas, and have been raising my flock of chickens for seven months.
It all started with an after school 4H animal science project. Right away, I was hooked and had to have my own wonderful and funny flock.
Since having moved to the east side of Austin...
Tina! You've given me a lot to think about, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion
They went onto deep litter two days ago. Respiratory symptoms had been showing up before that, so I don't think any new bugs were introduced.
I am using pine shavings and it should be completely clean as I...
Cafarmgirl, thanks so much for the reply!
If nothing else, it's reassuring to know that I'm doing some things correctly.
As for the Baytril, I had read that it was illegal for use in poultry in the USA? Am I mistaken, or do I have to find a vet who will prescribe it to my invisible goat?
I had...
One question: how does she feel about being in the kennel away from the other birds? As in, is she complaining or trying to get out, or is she just resting? That will tell me a lot about her state of being.
What you're probably feeling when you try to feel her throat is her neck. I know that sounds weird, but chickens have freakishly long necks that they "fold in" a lot of the time, so that it appears as though there's a lump where there isn't. You'd have to have her neck fully extended to feel it...
