    Major high temperature problems!

You could wire in a water heater thermostat to your heat lamp, and that'll keep it steady. You could also raise your heat lamp for an easier solution. I find that keeping the brooder in a constant area like an indoor room is better than keeping in the garage where surrounding temps fluctuate...

    First Time Hatcher 71%

Thanks! I kind of surprised myself with that rate for my first two. I had a temp spike of 120F in the first batch of 7 for about an hour an a spike early one of 108 in the 2nd batch. Once I covered the LG with a towel, the temp settled down and held a steady 99.5 for the remaining time with...

    First Time Hatcher 71%

Over the last 6 days we've hatched out our first 2 hatches ever. We had 5 out of 7 local eggs hatch and 15 out 20 shipped eggs hatched which is 71% for both hatches. This was a fun family project and will be doing it more in the future. We used the LG Still Air with egg turner.

    Our first hatch!!

I'm going to replace the newspaper today. We were out of clean shavings so will pick some up today after work. I hated to use it but I tend to be woefully reactive instead of proactive and didn't have the brooder hooked up until they started hatced. I will get a few more photos tonight and...

    Our first hatch!!

The 5th chick hatched today while at work, so 5 out of 7 isn't bad for our first hatch. We have 21 shipped eggs that should be hatching tomorrow or saturday, so we'll see how they do as well.

    Our first hatch!!

We have two batches of eggs going right now and the first batch was 7 eggs that we got from our neighbor. So far four have hatched and the 5th is pipped and cheeping. Here's a photo of the 4. They were due today and 2 hatched overnight and 2 hatched today.

    Just Hatched

Ok. thanks. I have no clue what chickens she has. We're going to go over tomorrow and talk with her and see what she has in her flock. They are more than likely mixed breedss

Free Range vs. Pellet Fed Hatch Rates

There is obviously a big difference in flavor/taste, smell, appearance of free range eggs when compared to feed lot/pellet fed birds, so this got me curious. Has anyone tested the hatch rates of free ranging birds vs pellet fed birds to see if there is a difference??

Separate the bully or the bullied?

Very nice! For us it "took" several months but that was mainly because we stopped trying after 2-3 failed attempts. They were just too brutal on her and after 2 times of her being bloodied and feathers pecked out, we decided to take her out for good. It wasn't until we cleaned the coop out...

Can somebody tell me how smart chickens are

They are so smart, we humans can't ever figure out why they like to cross the road so much.

    Best rooster for my flock?

I've had 3 cochin roosters and 1 easter egger rooster and neither were able to protect the flock from racoons, 'posums and dogs. The 3 cochins did loose their lives from neighbors dogs, but I can't say they gave up their lives protecting their flocks, just were the ones the dogs caught up to...

    Incubating in an Aquarium??

I've heard stories of people hatching eggs using the heat from the woodstove. Possible yes, however you will get better results from an incubator. Might be the difference in getting 0-30% hatch in aquarium versus 40-85% with incubator.

    Game Bird Permit

I know that each state is different but am wondering. If I hatch some quail eggs and don't plan to sell them or the chicks, am I required to have a game bird license?? They will be for personal enjoyment and consumption. FYI, I live in WV.

Separate the bully or the bullied?

I like the idea of giving her a friend while in isolation, but I'm far from an expert. When we separated our bullied chicken we tried separating her for 1 week and then 2 weeks to no avail. Each time we introduced her they would pick on her more. We finally pulled her out and kept her out...

    Humidity Factor with Broody Hen

Just curious about how the humidity factor comes into play when hatching eggs with a broody hen. It seems that a lot of emphasis is placed on humidity but that can't really be controlled can it when using a hen.

Separate the bully or the bullied?

We pulled a bullied hen out for several months and kept her separated. Howevershe could see the other chickens thru wire. It took several months but the others eventually accepted her. Its a long term plan but she needs to be separated but allowed to see the others thru wire. Can u divide a...
