It’s wonderful to meet you as well, I am Courtney. I am happy to be able to share information about wyondottes which wasn’t even my goal but I’m glad to have someone that knows about them. I appreciate you directing my post, it’s been very helpful.
I love a good challenge and I love the barred rock breed so I am happy to do it.
I’m thinking of purchasing a heritage Plymouth barred rock from Meyer’s and then use him to selectively correct my hens. I am not fond of my current rooster so I wouldn’t miss him and I could add some correct hens...
In the future I plan to replace this rooster. Could I raise out chicks and continue to choose roosters and hens that look most correct to barred rocks?
I don’t but I will get pictures of each individual bird tomorrow. I am hoping to be able to selectively breed out the incorrect traits as I want to have a flock of correct barred rocks.
Yes, that’s what I WANT my barred rock roosters to look like. Ideally I want to know what I have so that I can try to selectively breed out the traits that are “wrong” in barred rocks. I don’t know if that is even possible but it’s the goal.
Sorry, that wasn’t very clear. In the batch of chicks that I got (original 20 that are parents to my new hatch including white chick) would the odd coloring be more present in the roosters. Most hens look pretty typical to barred rocks while the roosters don’t. Can I expect this in the future...
She is beautiful!!! I have 2 that look really similar to this. I also have 2 that have a lot more red in the center of the feather. I’ll take pictures of them all tomorrow because I would love to know more.
That is a lot. I think I would ideally like about 40-50 birds. I am able to free range mine so that helps so much with the feed cost. Otherwise it would just be too much.
The chick just hatched and is still damp, I’ll take a photo tomorrow. I only have barred rocks. I knew some had to be mixed as the roosters are not right. I have a couple hens that are kind of grey, the barring isn’t crisp at all. Most of the hens have good crisp barring but some also have a...
He is so beautiful! Can I see a picture of your pullet? I’ll take pictures of mine tomorrow. I’m hopeful I get a BLG or BLR in my batch because I really want at least one.
I got a mix, I know I have 4 Colombian but the others I’m not sure of yet. I don’t intend to breed them for specific colors but it will be fun to breed them and see what I get. Chicken genetics are so fascinating!
What colorations are you expecting from that mix?
I got some wyondotte hens to do barnyard mixes but I love the idea of creating purebred barred rocks and selecting for correct color and form, so I certainly need to sort this out. I would love to have that many chickens :)
Thank you so much! I know only that barring can create sex linking. In barred rock chicks (true for my hatchery chicks that are the parents of my new hatch) the ones with a lot of white on the head were Roos. I did also have 3 from that same batch that were Roos and were barred just like the...
Hello,
I just got my first hatch from a batch of hatchery barred rocks. I know that the coloration is not perfect on some of my hens and on my roosters. Today when my eggs hatched there is a completely white chick which was very unexpected. Can anyone tell me what could have caused this so that...
