Its hard to know someone over an initial email. I wanted to avoid a long email message and to keep it short I apologize if I can across as a know it all. Your perspective on fighting was a help as it eliminated one potential but unlikely cause.
Thanks for the perspective on pecking order and fighting. I first thought that something may have gotten in but no signs of entry. Everything, top and sides is half inch welded wire and buried. The yard is surrounded by chain link fence and the dogs have done a good job of keeping suburban...
Today I found one of my four Red Sex Links dead in the corner of the run. At 10 AM all came running as they always have done when I toss in a handful of scratch. At noon I tossed a handful of grapes that they enjoy. At 230 I found her dead with the feathers and skin of her lower back gone and...
I have four 10 week New Hampshire hens. I noticed today that one is favoring her left leg/foot. I looked at prior messages to see if it was a break or sprain? She hobbles around on her "knuckle" and that is a little roughed up but I cannot see or feel any breaks or blood. When I pick her up...
I have a 10 foot long by 4 foot wide run about 4 feet high that I cover with a plastic tarp as follows. Every 2 feet or so across the short dimension I have a wooded cross member that the 2 x 4 welded wire is attached to. In the middle of each cross member I have a 3 inch tall piece of 2 x 4...
4 hens about 2.5 years old. Getting one egg a day and lots of feathers so someone is molting. Last week this one looked fine then today I noticed her neck. A little spot of blood too. She seems to be eating and moving about ok, but tends to stay in the coop when the others
are in the...
Thanks for the suggestions. She spent the night in the house and pooped in the box. It looked normal. Does that mean she is not bound? Still lethargic though. Could molting be a cause? I'll look into the other possibilities too.

I have 4 red layers about 2.5 years old. One has been lethargic for the last week. See stays by herself under cover most times and does not socialize with the others much. Seems to be drawn in with head and wings and legs tucked in. Appears to eat with the rest from what I can tell. Last...
I have four, 2 year old red layers and get 3-4 eggs per day. Tonight is the first night that one of the hens is roosting on a branch in the run while the others roost in the coop as usual. I have been letting them free range for a few hours when I get home from work and they always make their...
Thanks all. She was doing better the next mornng but no egg. I gave her some yogurt with crushed Tums. Then today she is laying again and acting normal. I'll keep and eye on her to see if it develops again.
It was unusual that my 4 hens only produced 3 eggs the last two days. Last night at dusk I noticed one in the nest box as if laying. But today only 3 eggs. She scratched around with the others when i let them out of the run to free range. I noticed her feathers seemed a bit full below...
I compost everything from the kitchen and office in my backyard, three bin system. Coffee grounds, veggie scraps, donuts, pasta, meat...anything that will biodegrade when mixed with shredded leaves except bones. In warmer weather its a hot pile and the items are "gone" in a few days. No...
Rather than cutting and trying to re-tie just turn the first bale in the line 90 degrees to the rest of the bales so that the butt end of the first bale forms the half piece
I painted for ease of cleanup on a very rough coop surface not privacy. When the inside of the boxes were painted they seemed almost too bright and I wondered if the brightness would impact their laying having read here that they like their privacy
