Silver spangled hamburg comb not growing

Update on Pearl. She is laying. About 15 a month. Started laying almost a year after we got her. Small cute little white eggs. Her comb etc is not much larger, though. She looks about the same.

    Lost first chook overnight

Lost our first chook last night/this morning. I know many of you have been here, so will not go into that. But I wonder what happened. She, with others, had recently (the past weeks) stopped going into the coop at night. Others do. When a mild night I just let it be. Can't herd chickens!! But I...

Silver spangled hamburg comb not growing

I thought I would chime in and ask those experienced. Here are pics of Pearl. She is one of the first 3 hens we bought in Dec 2020 (the other 2 are BantamX). This standing pic is from mid April, the sitting from the end of Aug 2021, and she looks the same. The seller said they were all laying...

    Humongous Egg!!!!!

Wanted to update on my big egg from Barnie. Since then she has not laid any eggs. Five days now. Wonder if she is recouping from such a colossal effort??

    Humongous Egg!!!!!

How funny - I just found a super large egg yesterday in the box, too. Powers of deduction say it is Barnie the Barnevelder, though almost twice the size. Well, I may be exaggerating. But still, really big! Don't think it is a new layer and the other 5 are definitely accounted for.

Recommendations for camera in the coop?

We have a Ring set up as that is what we use at the house generally. We now have 5 cameras around the run and coop. We have a WiFi extender plugged into an outlet nearby and that gives a very good connection. Four of the cameras are zoned into that. The camera in the coop itself is solar...

    Finding egg on coop floor

Thanks heaps for this. I assume a new layer as I do not have any older hens. The oldest is Old Girl and this is her 2nd season (was injured and gifted with the pullets). She lays daily on clockwork. For me the egg was soft shelled, but my definition may be off!!

    Finding egg on coop floor

I have a compound question and am hoping you learned folk can help! This morning I found a very soft shelled egg on the coop floor under the roost. Two mornings ago I found a damaged hard shelled egg in a similar spot (and it was a double yolk). I have chook cams but can only make out a time...

clipped wings and they can't reach the roost??? Help

My Hamburg was clipped when I got her (I was unaware). She has yet to roost, sleeps on the wood plank underneath. I will catch her looking longingly at the others on the roost (chook cam) but she can't figure it out. We have just made a ramp from the floor to the perches, hoping she figures that...

Does curiosity signal getting ready to lay?

Thanks for that! Yes, some do squat down when I go to pet them. Yay! More eggs soon!!!

Does curiosity signal getting ready to lay?

I don’t know to do that yet.

Does curiosity signal getting ready to lay?

From my 9 chooks, 6 are not yet laying. I have noticed the last week or so a big curiosity in visiting the coop during the day and checking out the nesting boxes. Nothing is happening, but they go in, sometimes with a buddy, check it out, and leave. Could this mean they are getting ready to lay?

    Runny Poo- Caused by Stress??

Thanks for this! Old Girl has had some caramel brown coloured loose poo recently. But we are at almost 90F temps and yesterday she ate a lot of greens (hogged the whole trough!). I noticed some other runnier bits from others and with the heat the water drinking is a good reason.

Recommendations for camera in the coop?

Yes, and good point! I change the motion detection to frequent instead of regular and that has helped a lot! I now see them leave in the morning and go in at night. And sometimes I catch one walking in towards the nesting box. Since only three of my chooks are laying so far – out of nine – there...

Recommendations for camera in the coop?

I have a stick up Ring as well in the coop. But half of the time it does not detect anything - kind of defeating the purpose. I have eggs but don't know who laid them. Part of the fun of having the cam is watching the chooks. Do you have any problems??? Or is there a set up issue I should look at?

Dealing with Loss of 1st Chicken

I am sorry for your loss and feel for you. We are nursing an injured one right now, Old Girl, and every day she gets stronger I hope more she will be OK.

    Barnevelder is not laying!

Thanks for that! I was generally wondering about comb/wattle size/colour in regard to egg laying. I also thought they need a bit of that before they lay as my 2 BantamX hens who are laying have combs/wattles. My SLBarn is 20 wks right now and no sign of any comb action, yet.
