I don't see any pics...
I totally get the overthinking issue - I am guil-TEEE of it myself.
You don't want to keep ALL the chickens on medicated feed forever because amprolium blocks thiamine, which they do need. I would feed medicated feed to any new chicks for at least 8-10 weeks - assuming...
If I'm remembering correctly, I think they were pretty much done growing by about 25 weeks or so. They've stayed about the same since they started laying (they may have gotten a little plumper, but not bigger in height). It's so fun to watch them waddle around the chicken yard! ☺️
They're pretty small. This is one of mine, Spicy Boots (just over 1 yr old), standing by some standard size hens. She looks a bit taller than usual because she's got her neck outstretched, but they're definitely the smallest of my bunch (except for Dinky in the bottom right corner - she's the...
Yes, yes, and yes.
You can totally tell when one is different from the rest in terms of activity and general vigor. I suppose this "feeling" you get does help soften the blow. Still sad, but perhaps a *little* less painful. ❤️🩹
:hugs
I'm not sure it gets "easier", but I do think you just sort of relent to the fact that these things happen sometimes (in fact, pretty frequently - especially in shipped chicks - especially bantams), despite our best efforts. It's likely that little one could have had some sort of...
Let's just say they cover all the locations where I'd be safe from getting mosquito bites/ticks where the sun don't shine  (literally amd figuratively). 😅
There's a young man on YouTube (Fast Gardening Michigan) who does something similar. He's a permaculture gardener who lives in Hartland, MI (which is quite close to where I am), so I like much of his content.
I'm not sure I could attempt this particular method (we have cameras surronding our...
Very good info, thank you for that!
I've definitely read about adding pest deterrent type plants as part of the permaculture design, I'm skeptical about how well they'll work (probably better for some pests and not so much for others), but will be incorporating them nonetheless.
I like the...
This is my biggest concern starting a permaculture food forest. How do we keep the animals from eating everything before we get a chance to harvest?! We have deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, sandhill cranes....literally all the wild animals! It seems like an exercise...
Oh geez! I did not know that RK sold chicks year round!! 😭 There's an RK not too far from us, but TSC is closer, so I don't usually go to RK for anything... I am shooketh.
"You cannot have more chickens, you cannot have more chickens, you cannot...Do not collect chicks, do not pass Go..." (me...
You can always try a bit of egg yolk...I know Meyer Hatchery recommends this (or warm scrambled egg) for lethargic chicks. I think there's also a sugar water recipe for an energy boost (1 teaspoon to 1 quart of warm water, IIRC), but I think that's only recommended to be given for a short period...
I feel that! I'm the exact same way when I have little ones. That's why I took a break from getting more - it's exhausting worrying about them all day and night (but worth it, too)!
They just seem so darn fragile (especially the bantams)!!
I have a REALLY hard time when I go into TSC. The only thing that keeps me from buying chicks is the horrible rep TSC has for mislabling breeds/sexes 😆. I just have to repeat "it's not what they say it is, it's not what they say it is..." 😵💫
You bet! Coccidiosis is scary and not fun at all. Thankfully Corid usually knocks it out pretty quickly and then those chicks will have built up an immunity to the type of organism on your property!
Please come back and update us on how they're doing! Sending good juju your way.
You can continue to feed the medicated feed or you can give them the regular feed (the medicated feed contains a very small amount of amprolium (Corid), so it won't cause an overdose or anything). What you have is the correct product. It is safe to use on the chicks. :)
Use the 1.5 teaspoon per...
...Corid.
Just follow the dosage suggestion of
Powder dose:
1.5 teaspoons per gallon for five days, then 1/3 teaspoon for 7-14 additional days.
**If you are using less than a gallon of water per day (I'm not sure how many chicks you have - I was using quart waterers when my chicks got...
