    Weird Coating on Egg

I know this is an old string, but had to comment here. I just got one like that, too. All my hens are new layers - not sure who it came from, but I'm hoping it is just due to the "newness of plumbing" factor. Makes sense!I have a BO, RIR, BR and some Ameracaunas. Who knows whose it is!!!

Will a rabbit protect chickens / chase off squirrels?

    Slightly moldy cherries

Funny, I've been tempted to do the same thing (grapes, cherries or whatever), but have not because I read here that you shouldn't feed your chicks anything that you wouldn't eat. After all the work you've invested managing your flock, I'd say play it on the safe side.

Chickens got into a bag of linseed meal - bad or good?

I found one of my meat birds feeding on an old bag of linseed meal (the people who lived here before us left it). My egg layers weren't at all interested in it. It had pecked through the packaging and was feasting on it. Is this okay, or will it harm the chickens? I hardly ever let them...

Will a rabbit protect chickens / chase off squirrels?

I guess we'll have to try the squirrel snare route - thanks for all the good info. I just wish there was something that was a natural squirrel predator that would make things easy! My cat gets gophers, mice, birds...we were hoping he would get a taste for squirrels, but no luck. Squirrel...

    Control flies and gnats indoors

Cool - thanks for posting this. I haven't experienced a hot summer with chickens yet, and I'm sure I'll be in great need of some kind of fly-keep-away thing...not looking forward to it! then again, maybe it'll keep the flies away from the house if they all "flock" to the coop!

If you think it can't happen to you please think again!

So sorry about your loss after all your hard work! Yeah - I get sick of going down at night to make sure they're all tucked in for the night and close up the coop. Last night, I was just wondering...is this really necessary....such a pain! I'm SO glad I read this - thank you!

Will a rabbit protect chickens / chase off squirrels?

We are OVERRUN with squirrels! The pellet gun has helped a little, but new families just keep moving in. A friend of mine said that she once kept a bunny with her chickens and the bunny would actually try to kick at her when they went out to collect the eggs. I'm wondering if a large rabbit...

What's your favorite type of roo?

I have one BR (Shadow) and one RIR (Kobe). The BR is sooo sweet. He makes a bit of a fuss when I pick him up, but once he's on my lap, he settles in for a nap and extends his little neck across my arm. He's only 10 weeks old, so we'll see how long this lasts. The RIR isn't mean, but...

Can you feed chickens banana peels???

Quote: Oooh - great idea. I wonder if this would keep squirrels and bunnies away, too....?

Can you feed chickens banana peels???

Oh - didn't see that! I've been giving mine banana peels and they just eat whatever banana "meat" is left in the peel and leave the rest alone. They ate them a few days ago and all are just fine. Maybe the list states what they "will" eat as opposed to what they won't eat.... ?

Help!! How do I catch my chickens without going nuts!?!?

Yep! It works great, huh? But, I just hate it when I'm in my pajammies in bed and then realize I haven't closed the coop door yet!! DOH!

    Why won't they roost?

I'm so glad I read this! I'm in SoCal and it's only been getting down in the 50s overnight. Ha! I can't believe I've been worried about them even with the heat lamp in their coop! They're about 9 weeks old so I guess it's time to take out their "baby cage" (an old bunny hutch) and let them...

    Hey from Down South!

Hello and welcome!! You've come to the right place to get the big overview AND details on chickens!! I don't know if this is the most important thing I've learned, but it's surprising how they can really be like pets!! Some are very affectionate and can't wait for an open lap to snuggle on.

    Kindergartener brings home chickens

Hello and welcome! Same thing happened to me - we "adopted" the 2nd grade chickens. We LOVE them and often have different kids from the class over to see how they've grown - the kids love that! You'll find lots of help here. Be sure to post pics of your chicks in the "what breed or gender"...
