How do I know when my geese will be ready to lay? I have no experience with geese. Chicks I know by their comb and desire to be in a nest box.
also is it common for them to eat eggs?
I’ll be watching to see how you solve... I have 3 laying in the rafters... one starting using a box but when I took out all her eggs - rafters. I have tried fake eggs - think that attracted her but now ignoring boxes. Had happen with a girl who is now raising chick and two others - liked laying...
I recently added two young male goats as weed control - they share the hen house. Lovable boys who act more like dogs in wanting attention. I recently was out socializing with the group and was petting a pullet on my lap when one of my boys came over and stuck her foot in his mouth. There was...
I did a brief necropsy of a hen who died with peritonitis. I caught just the day before as she seemed normal. No droopy pale comb or strange behaviour. When I cut her stomach her insides looked like a folded up octopus. I didn't have my phone so pics are from this am....what may have been cause...
Short and simple - have 2 Pekín with bumble foot- tried holistic. Measures now knees are swelling- how much injectable penicillin or baytril to give? Called vet at in set said oral meds not a good option for ducks and they really aren't that experienced with ducks....
Anyone have experience with Lymphoproliferative Disease Virus? We have wild turkeys who graze on the fields with the chickens regularly. Are pox spread in bird to bird contact? Or could he have gotten them from a wild turkey or other bird while free ranging rather than a mosquito?
Just came home from a week away- found my youngest roo like this.... I didn't notice last night, this am or even first thing tonight- until I saw his bad side- in isolation not sure what good as not sure when it started- no one else that i can find tonight is showing signs. He's happy energetic...
Did I doom this chick?
I saw that it pipped this am at 8.... When I got back 12+hrs later it was in a dry shell with membrane sticking to it. It is COLD tonight in the negative numbers so I removed some of the shell ....ok most of it. The egg sack was absorbed--- I have the chick wrapped in a...
I am getting a new drake for my two girls but don't know if I need to keep him seperated and if so for how long? (I do keep my birds all together in a hen house - turkeys, chickens and ducks) Will I need to worry about him flying off? My girls think they are chickens (raised with 6 chicks as...
I am looking to add hens for my Guapo, my holland white Tom. He was one of four bought at a feed store last summer - out of the 4 I had three toms. Good for eating but I want babies. My girl is not really too interested in breeding. (She is kinda masculine - to the point of having a beard too-...
Thank you.
It has been awhile since Ive been on and battling it again with my other red hen.
Her belly is solid and I know that she is laying internally.
I have had enough pass (Lost my two naked necks to it) to know when they are uncomfortable. I thought it may have been peritinitis earlier and...
I whole heartedly agree. They little pluckers are some of the most LOVING birds. Their longer necks allowed them to cuddle better than hens. They are wonderful watch dogs - 'barking' at who ever comes into their territory. Great at feeding themselves. Hardy and I did not find them hard to raise...
I have raised two sets of turkeys to maturity. I allowed them to grew inside for the first week or two and then put them in a spare hutch. When that was crowded (the weather was better and it was warm enough in the garage to be without a heat source) I formed a temp pen out of fencing which I...
