My goal for this coop was to be as green (cheep) as possible. I had pretty much all the supplies I needed, minus the fasteners.
Lots of 2" brads- supplies on on hand
Box of 3" galvanized screws- $7.36
(2) 1/2" x 1" x 6' pine boards- $4.28
1 set of 1" inch hinges- $1.98

I put my food and water in the covered run due to the lack of space in the coop. Last week I found that a dove had wondered in to the coop to grab a snack. So just watch out for scavangers.
My yard is very small, I check for surprise eggs often. I'm starting to think that she is just not a good layer.
I raised her from two weeks old, her age could only be off by a week or so. You can also tell that she is not laying by her size. Compared to her "sister" of a different breed...
I have a 23 week old chicken that has begun laying eggs. I don't know what type of chicken she is, but she looks like a standard white chicken that lays white eggs. She's on layer feed and has a light in the coop. All day long she has free range over the yard.

I just got my first egg today and I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it. Mostly I'm going to eat it, but I'm trying to figure out how to celebrate the occasion. Any thoughts?
I just got my first egg! The culprate is a mix breed, I think. Her name is Mixer. She is 17 weeks old today and started laying 5 days after I put a golf ball in her "nest". Apparently all she needed was an 8x8 brick turned on it's side to look like a nexting box.
Here she is enjoying some...
Thus far I have been able to screw up their routine. As a result they never 'ask' for treats, it's great. In stead I have trained them to come when called. A short, quick, "chick chick chick" and they come running like a bat out of heck. It took about two weeks for them to get the idea...
