Soft shell egg following regular egg?

My girls are laying steadily, which is excellent. This afternoon I went out after the last one was out of the nest box and collected three eggs--one per chicken. Just a little while ago, I let them out to wander the yard for a while. I was watching my blue wyandotte and easter egger battle over...

    Wonky Wyandotte--broody or sick?

Hi BYCers, My blue wyandotte has been acting strange. Normally she's disinterested in being held, very active in scratching about and running around the yard. The last few days she's increasingly spending all her time in the nest box. She's lost weight -- I don't know how much, but it's...

Wyandotte just started laying, bloody stool

What kind of egg-withdrawal time am I looking at with Sulmet? I assume that means we can't eat their eggs for a certain period, or does it put them off laying? I'm just going to give it to them, since that's what I have and we can't really pick up anything else today.

Wyandotte just started laying, bloody stool

    1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Either my Blue wyandotte or my SLW. Both started laying this week, both are approx. 6.5 months old. Don't know weight, but they're still growing, seem normal weight. 2) What is the...

    More Chicken Squatting Talk

Thanks! Today Fancy, and Penguin (the blue wyandotte) both laid! We kept putting off making a nest box, and Fancy dug herself a nest under the hanging feeder. Today we put in a nest box, and the EE scouted it out and sang a short version of the egg song before rejoining the rest of the flock...

Gonna wash that poop right out of your fluffy butt?

Not an old timer, but I just wanted to point out that an entire bath isn't necessary--a damp rag to the tush will remove the offending poo (or you could trim it out if it's only on the ends of the feathers) without getting the whole bird wet.

    More Chicken Squatting Talk

Finally! I went out just now to give them some treats, and there was a small light brown egg in the corner by the food. Fancy (the SLW) is much less cranky than she has been, so I suspect it's hers. If I can get my hands on a camera I'll post pictures of the egg & the bird!

    More Chicken Squatting Talk

Quote: Hi sheryl, I have one SLW, hatchery chick in a flock of three. She's about 6.5 months old, I think, and the top chicken as well as the biggest. She and the other wyandotte are both bossy with our sweet EE, but not bullies, as far as I can tell. I'm not sure what folks mean when they...

    More Chicken Squatting Talk

We have three (heretofore lazy, freeloading) chickens at my house. The SLW, who we think is about 5-7 days older than the others, has been squatting for a few days. Just now I went outside to say hi, and my blue wyandotte popped a squat! She looked and sounded so surprised! I came running in the...

Rest well my Sweet Sweet Sylvia

What a beautiful tribute. Animals know when they're well-loved, and I'm sure it was a comfort to her that you were with her at the end.

    What do my silkies need?

My chickens ate treats pretty early. We had a grain moth problem when they were still in our basement "brooder" and we used to catch the moths and release them in the chicken box. The birds went wild for them. On occasion we gave them yogurt when they seemed out of sorts; the first time they...

the [egg] wait is driving me crazy!!!

kari_dawn, my SLW, Fancy is about the same size as Jasmine, and just as red in the face. She's 6 months old and just started doing the shuffle-squat yesterday. She's also gotten even more talkative and has been yelling at us whenever we go outside. I hope she'll start laying, AND that she won't...

What breed and gender is (s)he?

She looks a lot like our 6 week old Ameracauna pullet in body, comb, and tail shape, as well as because of her green feet, neck length and neck feathers. I'm no expert, but I'd say you have a pullet.
