KBgirls, I always reccommend 30 day quarantine for any new chicken being added to your flock. That gives time for any illness they may be harboring to show up without exposing your flock. Just one sick chicken can wipe out an entire flock.
A bare butt can also be a sign of mites or lice. Check her feathers closely for nits and bugs and check the coop at night. Mites hide in the wood during the day and come out at night. It can also be from her being picked on by someone. Sometimes they do it themselves, either out of habit or when...
A floppy comb usually indicates they aren't feeling well. As does ruffling feathers and pulling in the neck. I would isolate her, watch her poop, monitor her eating and drinking, listen to her breathing. I would give her some vitamins and see if it perks her up.
That bright yellow almost looks like yolk. Is she laying yet? Has she been laying? She may be egg bound or be internal laying. Yellow poop can also indicate worms. I would have it tested. Or even take her in to be examined.
Have you checked her vision? Does she run from you if you slowly put your hand into the brooder to grab her, without making noise? Does she walk in circles? Does she run into things? If you can rule out vision, check heat. If she is avoiding the light, she might be too hot. If she is staying...
I am getting SOOOO much mixed information on dewormers and egg withdrawal. I am hoping to nail down what is TRUE.
Safeguard - what is the correct egg withdrawal when using equine paste and giving a pea size amount directly to the chicken, not in water. I have heard no egg withdrawal all the...
I just wanted to update the thread. We lost Maura. She never did regain eating or drinking or even going to the bathroom. A necropsy was performed and she was NOT sick. She had a rare incidence happen to her, either by trauma or genetics. But Maura's intestines twisted on her. When they twisted...
...her, she does great. She is now 7 weeks old and thriving wonderfully, still blind.
Chances are though, it is simply because she is lonely.
*Edited to say, I raised Japanese bantam and golden comets together. Almost a week in age difference, the bantams were way smaller than the comets...
Thanks so much, Eggcessive!!! Crossing my fingers she pulls through and watching the rest of the flock!! Should I go ahead and treat all just in case? I have varying ages from 4 weeks up to 8 months and laying.
I have 13 chickens and this is my first ill one. I clean coops daily, rake the run weekly, they free range, I do medicated starter as chicks, I give them fresh fruits and veggies as well as apple cider vinegar, garlic, and pumpkin. As hard as I try, she still got sick. Sometimes a chick can have...
Thanks for the fast answers!!! I have started her on corid, but had to get the powder at 20% because its all our TSC carries and I wanted to hurry. RK is all the way across town. I put in 1/2 tsp to a gallon, should I add more? I halfed the dosage I was told in another board since the dosage is...
She was the last to come out of their coop yesterday but the rest of the day, she was fine. Normal poop, normal eating, normal foraging, normal drinking. Went to bed with the rest. This morning, I found her huddled in the corner of the run by herself with blood on her back end feathers. I...
The poop pic looks pretty normal, they have that kind of poop every so many times of going. What is the yellow stuff? What kind of feed? Have you tried electrolytes and vitamins in the water? You will need to hand water him to be sure he is getting water. Chickens have to have water to regulate...
Is it still like that? The crop looks like that just when they are full too and as they digest, it goes down. Open her mouth and see if you smell anything weird. If so, it's sour crop but that's not common in a chick that young. Make sure she is getting plenty of water and chick feed for the...
