My friend also has chickens and people keep giving her hens when they decide they don't want them anymore. Recently someone gave her an Easter Egger and she lays cute little mint green eggs. Her husband won't eat them. He claims that his grandparents raised eggs for grocery stores and had...
I put fake eggs in the nesting boxes and my girls have all layed in the boxes every time, even though we let them free range. They go back to the coop and lay then run back out to join the flock.
One of our RIR started laying on Monday. We've gotten 3 eggs from her. This morning the kids found a broken one and are convinced that one of the GLW laid it and the RIR is due to give us one today. They've gone out about 50 times today. :lol
I think they also think that since we have one...
My theory is that roosters instintively crow when it starts to get light. And up until just over 100 years ago, it was DARK at night. No street lights, no city lights, no electric lights in houses. DARK. These days it isn't anywhere near that level of dark in most places, so they see the...
I have three girls with large red combs and they are squatting when you touch their backs. They are 21 weeks old I think. Are we at the any day now point or will it still be several weeks?
My girls have discovered my tomato plants and have decided they are their personal snack bar. I had a huge tomato almost ready to pick and they ate half of it. They've eaten several so far, green and almost ripe.
My friend's husband, who says his grandparents were farmers ad considers himself a country boy, swears that commercially slaughtered animals are slaughtered more humanely than those slaughtered at home. This conversation started because I refused to see anything wrong with the supposed Hispanic...
I brought some sticks in from outside and my chicks love to roost on them. They aren't very high, but I find them on there all the time. My chicks are almost 2 weeks old and have been roosting for about a week.
I have their waterer up on a brick and one of the sticks is propped on the same...
I'm totally new at this, but I have a week old chick that was lethargic and not growing well. I started giving it poly-vi-sol baby vitamins and it has perked up considerably. I would try that and maybe feeding it some baby parrot food.
Trying again with pictures of this chick. Chicks are a week old or so. One RIR is half the size of the other one. She eats and drinks, but she also sleeps a lot and spends most of her time under the heat lamp. She even falls asleep every time we hold her.
I've started giving her vitamins...
Well, crap. I cannot figure out how to link pics directly.
She does eat. I've seen her. I picked up some baby vitamins today, too.
I can separate her. I've also got a boiled egg cooling thinking maybe she needs a boost of protein.
Chicks are a week old, plus a couple of days (assuming 2-3 days when we bought them). One RIR is much smaller and has fewer feathers than the other one. She seems to eat, drink and run around. She does seem to sleep more, and if you hold her, she nestles down and goes to sleep whereas the...
I can't figure out how to post pictures. I'm on a Mac and new to it and it is different than my old PC. But, here is a link to my FB album:

I didn't get any pics, but earlier today I found my daughters...
the dogs keep trying to tell me that there is something in the kitchen that I need to come see. Come see, mom! Whine whine!
Our brooder is a rubbermaid tote inside the dog crate, which has turned out to be a brilliant idea because I didn't anticipate the dogs wanting to see the chicks quite...
Not the birds themselves, but feeding them, etc? The kids and I are trying to convince my husband we NEEEEED chickens and he is wondering about the monthly expense. I'm certain they won't actually cost that much, but he always takes the worst case scenario outlook.
