Hello. We recently lost our oldest hen and we're down to one chicken. We'd like to find a new home for her since we'll be taking a break from raising chickens. Her name is Dottie and she's a healthy 6 year old Crested Cream Legbar. She doesn't lay anymore so we wanted to find a forever home...

Could this be scaly leg mites?

Oh no. That's what I was afraid of. When it's in the toes like this is it still treatable?

Hi everyone. I’m moving from the SF Bay Area to the San Gabriel Valley in a few months and we are bringing our 3 hens with us. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good vet? We'll be living in the Covina/West Covina area but are willing to drive to see a good vet.

Hen drinking excessive amounts of water

Thanks @Eggcessive. Yes, it's a little distended but it's full of water in that photo. Her crop is emptying overnight and she passing food. I checked this morning and her crop felt empty. Regarding the Scratch and Peck - they definitely eat their favorite parts first. I serve it to them wetted...

Hen drinking excessive amounts of water

Hi everyone, We have a hen (Gertie) that is drinking excessively and spilling from her crop. She won't stop drinking water. I'm stumped. If anyone has experience, thoughts, or ideas on what path I should investigate I'd really appreciate it. Details and photos below. Thank you so much in...

    Seriously? Breaking Broody

That sounds tiring. It’ll probably subside in the winter. In the meantime you can always give her fertile eggs and let her hatch them. Or let her set for a few weeks and give her 1 or 2 day old chicks to raise. I recently had a breakthrough with our Delaware who likes to go broody once in a...

Is aspirin ok after bumblefoot surgery?

Thanks for the reply Wyorp. Well, I did end up giving her a half of baby asprin yesterday. She's alert, happy and active today so I think she's on the mend. I re-dressed the wound and it seems to be healing.

Is aspirin ok after bumblefoot surgery?

Hi everyone, I had to do bumblefoot surgery on a hen this morning. She's exhausted and I'm sure her foot is throbing. She's limping so I know it hurts. My question is whether it's safe to give 1/2 a baby aspirin after bumblefoot surgery. For those who are interested here are some pics of the...

Is being broody an individual impulse or a seasonal thing?

It'll just happen on its own. From what I know, the lengthening days and increase in daylight hours triggers a hen's hormones to start laying and to also go broody. Some breeds are known for being broody and others are not. It can also depend on the individual hen. Some are habitualy broody, and...

Signs a hen is ABOUT to go broody?

I believe it can be stressful to a broody hen when you pull her off the nest too many times. Either put her in a pen with a wire bottom until she breaks, or give her fertile eggs to hatch. Alternatively you can give her 1-3 day old chicks as long as she's sat for at least 2 weeks straight. :jumpy

    My chickens peck me- why?

It's essentially learned through positive reinforcement. A peck results in scratches or pets which can be as good as treats. I actually trained all our hens to tap my hand (a soft peck) when they want to be scratched. When they pecked too hard I'd gently push them back until they learned to give...

Signs a hen is ABOUT to go broody?

A sure sign that our Dellaware is about to go broody is when she starts making that low clucking sound, and when she keeps her tail feathers spread out. That, and she just flat out starts acting crazy. Usually within a day or two of seeing this she'll be glued to the nest.

    Do chickens feel sad?

On Tuesday we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl Henrietta. He sister Della is the last remaining of the 3 original hens. They were together from the day we brought them home 3 years ago. As they matured their pecking order emerged, but they always remained sisters. We have raised our...

    Koop Clean Availability?

Yes, it IS getting much harder to find. Our local feed store use to cary it. Then I had to order it online from ACE Hardware. But they stopped carying it. Tractor Supply use to cary it. Now I have to drive 40 miles to go get it. It's a great product so I'll stock up on a few bags. Should last...
