Hello,

We have a hen who is developing swelling in her feet and toes. The tips of her toes look like there are sores and walking looks really painful. Could this be scaly leg mites?

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Cream Legbar, 3 1/2 years old, 2-3 lbs at most - very underweight from having an impacted crop during her molt Oct-Nov

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Walking looks painful, but she'll get up in a hurry for some treats. She mostly lies down, and when she stands she's favoring her right foot. Her left foot appears to be worse than the right foot.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
2-3 weeks showing discomfort - within the last week her feet are beginning to swell and develop sores.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No. We have 2 other hens and both are not showing any symptoms.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
Tips of her toes look like there are sores

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
We just moved so perhaps something in her environment is causing irritation to her feet?

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Scratch & Peck Layer, and Scratch & Peck pellets

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Droppings are a little loose/runny

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
None so far

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Stabilize until we can take her to the vet

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
We just moved and built a brand new coop. Roost bar is 1x3 about 8 inches off the floor, and bedding is Coop Clean.

Not SLMs, I think it looks more like bumblefoot. But yes, we need photos of the soles of her feet. Her nails are crazy long!

@Wyorp Rock could definitely help more with emergencies! Good luck!

You mention you moved.
Is the surface of the run different now, like more stones or rock?

I agree, it looks like Bumblefoot on the pad of her foot, but the toes look irritated from something. Perhaps she's scratching them up somehow.

I would try the non surgical approach in the article that @cherrynberry linked, that's the best approach instead of trying to cut out the kernel.
Her feet look a bit puffy, so she may be starting to have some gout or arthritis, hard to know. But I would first address the bumble and the irritation to see if she improves.

I would slather on some vaseline, oil or triple antibiotic ointment to the toes and legs to help sooth the cracked skin and scratches. You can wrap them, they just need to be checked daily.
