Update: Red passed away couple of hours ago. Although the swelling appeared to be hardened outside with no more bleeding, it may have interfered with her breaking.
Thanks again. I will start measuring weight. I have to go back and check but I read somewhere here on the amoxilicin dosage - 125mg twice a day so thats 250mg per day. I will check again and change dosage based on weight.
Update: The Red is still fighting it. Thanks to advise here and a detailed thread on "Go Team Tube Feeding", I was able to locate a "Urinary Catheter" and been feeding antibiotic and some liquid food for last two days.
As was the experience with the author of that thread, NONE of the animal...
There was only one thread that seems similar to my situation.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/763473/horrible-swollen-thing-coming-out-of-my-hens-mouth
The bird did not survive in that case.
Unfortunately no prednisone. Couldnt come up with any on jeffers or TS site. Any...
She seem to be breathing ok, I can see huge tube open outside.
I hope she makes it through.
I found the following document very helpful on anatomy and physiology.
Page 3.7 of http://kenanaonline.com/files/0073/73747/CHICKEN%20ANATOMY%20AND%20PHYSIOLOGY.pdf
Yes, I may not have given enough benadryl last night. Got liquid ben this morning and gave her 1/2 cc dose. Looks like the poison affected the tissue pretty bad and her tongue is cutting into the swell.
After reading up on the anatomy, looks like the part thats affected is Glottis.
I read bit more on this and found a thread from 2013 with someone else having issue. Looks like it could be a bee / wasp / spider bite inside the throat. Gave her tiny bit of benadryl last night, some electrolyte liquid.
All vets around here are into mostly dogs, cats etc.
She is still...
Went to close up coop and found Red with huge swelling hanging from the mouth. The swelling is like a bulb with a tube (airway?) at the end. Her tongue (?) is hard like a beak and black/red. There is a hard tumor like growth at the left side of that tube end (looking at the picture, attached)...
Thanks again. I have been reading about various dewormers and antibiotics. Can you recommend any one combination ?
This is the first time I will be deworming or using antibiotics for my little flock. Appreciate it.
Thanks. I tried it, nothing came out and checked the crop and neck again.
By afternoon the crop is soft and I dont feel any hard food in there. The neck seems not hard (no lumps or anything).
She keep her mouth wide open, I can see back of her "tongue" and opening into Trachea & Esophagus...
I am panicking this morning because one of my chickens keeps her beak open (almost like trying to throw up),
has wobbling walk and doesnt seem like interested in drinking water.
I checked her crop in the morning, and it did seem hard. She is keeping her beak really open as I can see her back...
Here is my theory on this subject. Bird (and chicken) nests are never flat in the wild. They look like a slice of sphere.
And when you imagine a chicken sitting in there, like setting a slide of another smaller sphere in there,
there would be less space at the bottom than top of sides.
Eggs...
Looks good. I greatly underestimated state of chaos once they start to hatch.
I had 12 in the incubator and not too much space. Once they started to pop
they were stampeding over. I had to move them out into brooder often.
She is weak and was alone in the incubator with no water bowl in the incubator.
Since my post, it seem to have improved and I moved her in with rest of the chicks.
She is keeping herself busy with all the entertainment around and getting some exercise
by moving around. Hope she recovers ok.
I had to rescue a chick that pipped but through a blood vessel. After full day of work, she is finally out.
She seems weak and her lower belly is still round, yet to be absorbed yolk I guess.
Its already been 36 hours since she pipped.
Should I make her drink some water ?
Should wait for the...
I am new to incubating and learned lot of things with my recent try. I am trying to better understand science of shrink wrapping.
My interest is in answering questions such as
a) what is really going on
b) why helping at wrong stage is actually bad
Appreciate your thoughts and wisdom in...
I did chip little piece off the aircell space and peaked. All three are dead at some point in development.
So 8 are in the brooder and 1 is in critical state in the incubator. She seem to have pipped into blood vessel
and positioned in awkward way. Not sure if its going to make it.
