    Clavamox source!

Thanks for checking in! Loretta did not improve with the clavamox. In fact she was relatively healthy when she started taking it (she was treated for irregular eggs) and she became quite ill once on the antibiotic. After conferring with the vet today we decided to take her off the clavamox. It's...

    Clavamox reaction

Thanks so much for your feedback. I did use a avian vet for diagnosis and treatment. I'll give him a call this morning.

    Clavamox reaction

My two year old hen started on clavamox a few days ago. It's for a possible infection of her shell gland. She has been laying soft shelled eggs for two months after nothing for six months. Three days ago she started 275 mg of clavamox twice daily. She has become extremely lethargic and vomits...

    Clavamox source!

Thanks Paneubert! That is great information. So far, Loretta is not faring well with the clavamox. She is extremely lethargic, vomits whenever I pick her up and she has clear diarrhea. Hoping she will turn the corner soon.

    Clavamox source!

I just started my hen on clavamox yesterday to treat an infection preventing her from forming egg shells. She's on 375 mg two times daily. It's actually two pills, and a real pain to give to her. Tonight, I finally wrapped her in a towel, and that helped. I'm curious about the longevity of the...

    Hen eating soft-shelled eggs

The crazy egg she laid two months ago after taking a six-month break. My Black French Copper Marans (2 years old) started laying soft shelled eggs about two months ago. To help her I started offering free-choice oyster shell, in addition to her feed (which also contains calcium). So far I...

    Marans losing all her feathers

Thanks to you both for your kind replies. I'm thinking this is a molt. She has a few teeny feathers coming in on her bum, but she's mostly bare there. I'll wait it out and see what happens.

    Marans losing all her feathers

My Black French Copper Marans had a light molt in November in which she lost some of her neck and back feathers. They grew back in by February, and she resumed laying eggs in early March. (This photo is from two weeks ago. She has lost a considerable amount of feathers since then.) A few...

Marans laid first egg, then nothing!

Loretta, my Black French Copper Marans, laid her first egg at 19-1/2 weeks. Then for the next week and a half she hasn't laid again. My Olive Egger, Gigi, and Dominique, Nellie, started laying at the same time, and have been churning out the eggs. Loretta seems healthy, and energetic, so I'm...

Moving: Need to find a chicken-friendly town near Brighton, Michigan

I may be moving in the near future, and I need to find a town that allows chickens. Ideally, I would like somewhere between Ann Arbor and Lansing, and that feels like the Brighton area. I have three hens. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

Thanks everyone for your kind replies! I moved the girls out to the coop on Saturday night. It dipped down to 34 degrees! I was sooo worried. I checked on them three times during the night, and each time they were snuggled together in a pile of feathers. I'm happy to report they did wonderfully...

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

Thanks so much for your response. My coop is pretty solid. We dug down a rat wall, and reinforced wire mesh on all outdoor walls. So the run is completely enclosed. I plan on putting the food from the run in a tamper-proof container overnight. I guess I was asking about the food in the hen...

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

Thanks so much. It's just so hard to let these babies go, after nurturing them for these past several weeks. I'm so grateful for your encouragement. And I know they are too. They love it in the coop, (they've made several visits) and are probably more ready than I am to make the move!

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

Thanks so much for your response! This is my first time with chickens, and I'm a nervous nellie. With your input, we've decided to put the chicks out this upcoming weekend. Of course it's supposed to rain, with lows in the mid-30s, but I'll be here to check on them, and jump in if needed. I'm so...

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

One last question: Did you put food and water in the hen house with the chicks at night, or did you leave that only in the run?

Detroit version of Wichita Cabin Coop

Now that the chicks are about to move into the coop, I thought I'd post a photo of the finished product: We finally have the ramp and feeder/waterer installed, along with some festive party lights. The girls can't wait for moving day! Cheers!!

What is your "If only someone had told me!" moment?

I wish someone had told me that the small lump on a chick's chest is NOT a tumor, but actually the crop full of food. I totally freaked out about that! :)

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

Seriously! We just emerged from the snowiest winter in Detroit since 1890. We are SO ready for some warm weather!!! My best to you and your babies!!!

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

Thanks so much for your reply! Mine have been off of the heat lamp about about five days, and are in a steady 64-degree basement. The seem to be adjusting to the cooler temperature just fine. I'm glad to hear that you have put your chicks out in similar temperatures. Thanks for the reassurance!
