    I think that almost any breed of hen with moderate to high egg production will be a good pet, as long as they are handed OFTEN as chicks and adults. That makes the biggest difference. (Having children around tends to help) I think that breed isn't everything, because your chickens will develop...

    Dusting baths? what are they? what's in them?

    Do you plan to let them roam in your yard, or put any mulch or loose dirt into their pen? That would probably take care of the problem. Dust bathing is a natural instinct, to remove parasites clense and cool their skin. (Just like in other animals) check out these great pictures...
