I lost 13 chickens one morning last month due to heat! I had our yard sprayed for ticks and had to leave them in the coop until noon. I was aghast when I opened the coop! We have left our chickens for 2-3 nights in the coop last summer when we went awaywithout any issue.
We cried for days...
I just ordered too!
1 black frizzled Cochin
1 sebright bantam
1 blue crested polish
1 jersey giant named Teresa after the house wife from NJ!
1 Easter egger
1 buff brahma bantam
All will be here to join 8 others on April 16! I love MPC!
'tis the season for ordering chickens!
I too was worried about this. I have 9 eight week old chicks from Mypetchicken.com. One has turned out to be a roo- a salmon favoorelle roo.. I have come to grips with it since there is only one and have accepted him. We try to handle him frequently to ensure he is a nice roo. If he shows...
I put some yummy Yoplait Vanilla in the brooder just now. Maybe that will help. The smell isn't coming from the pine shavings as some of the poop has a vial diarrhea smell and look to it. Some of the chickens have normal, slug like poop and others have runny black poop. Any other ideas??
Mine stink too!!! Disgusting. They are in the basement and are 7 weeks old. I clean their brooder often too. We get the coop tomorrow and can't wait to get them out of the house.

Are you positive it is a roo (as in crowing)? One hatchery I know of has some really mismarked pullets. Some from them have a LOT of black and make you think roo when it's just a badly colored girl.
No, I am not certain but it is jet black and has all of the markings of a roo. Below...

Don't know about hatchery birds, but my boys are calm. But boys will be boys, when it comes to breeding season
So how quickly do you need to grab the eggs if they have been fertilized???

Mine was from mcmurray. Odd thing is that they sent two sexed favorelles and it appears both look alike. Ah well. I wasn't the original purchaser, so not much I can say to the hatchery. Hatchery birds can be off in color, but not sure they would be THIS off. Mine...

Did you get yours from mpc? My other one ...6 weeks...is darker too, just not black like this one.

Is it the coloring or the comb that make you so sure?
What's funny is that he was the "runt" of thhe group with lots of pasty butt and crying. I babied him to life! Hmmm...
I will have to get used to the idea and see how he turns out. Photos online look like they are beautiful roosters...
It seems one of our "hens" is a roo. Does anyone have experience with salmon favorelle roosters? It will be the only male with 8 hens, one of which is a salmon favorelle pullet. Are they typically nice roosters? It is from a hatchery.
Here are the pics of my Salmon Favorelle chick...6 weeks old. Seems too dark to be a pullet!!! I have read that some hatcheries chicks can turn out darker but maybe some of you experts could tell if this is a roo.
I have two 6 week old Salmon Favorelles from Mypetchicken.com. They are supposed to Salmon Favorelle pullets but one has a black chest with brown wings and some white tips on the wings. Is it DEFINITELY a roo? Or could it possibly be a dark hen? I am so nervous that it may be a roo. How is...
