I had hoped to be more judicious about my chicken blogging, but honestly things have gotten away from me somewhat. The brooder is now a much larger box, about 35” x 65” (our new bathtub had come in it). Even still, we anxiously await the day our little flock has a new coop of their...

After considering for several months and reading a great deal of information, I decided chickens would be a fine alternative for my family's next pets. My wife nor I are interested in getting (although we're both sure our kids will eventually wear us down) a dog just now...

In my experience, some birds are just slow to feather. Cockerels, in particular, may feather slower. Last spring, I had a six-week-old with similar feathering (no twisting though). The rest of the group was well-feathered and ready to go outside. He kept getting bigger and bigger, but...
Just a thought, If you throw a couple of bricks in there you're going to pull the temperature way down while they come up to temp. There going to act like giant heat sinks. Once they're up to temp, they'll regulate the temps very well. I would suggest using a jar filled with water and cotton...

I'd like to second what bakerjw said and take it a bit further. I think, like bakerjw, that you might be able to altered behavior a little. I think, however, there are some roosters that can't be changed or at least not significantly enough to warrant them sticking around. Even if I...
Your chickens aren't goats or horses, they're not going to ingest the PT lumber. IMO...They're much more likely to pick up toxicity from the things you feed them and environmental elements. PT lumber has never seemed to affect mine.

No problem there, if I get them from a retailer they are legally bound to sell me six at a time. I'm thinking of getting some RIR so I can breed some sexlinks. I have to look up which one needed to be the roo, though. I think it's RIR roo that makes the sexlinks with Delawares.
If...
Although I've never tried resting after sealing, I would agree with you. I've always been of the mind that your goal is to promote biotic activity to a degree in order to assist with enzymatic break down of collagen and other "stiff" stuff, something akin to dry-aging beef. So, I guess I just...
Just sit on your hands. Don't open the bator. Let it be. If you get in there and mess around, there's a good chance that you will shrink wrap the chick in the shell.
Let nature run its course. Give them time to what they need to do. Once they do hatch, you have 48-72 hours before that need...
Last spring I was in the same boat. What I was told is that you're good for up to a 3 week difference. I had week-olds and month-olds together with no problems.
I'm pretty sure you're correct about the two cockerels. However, I am reasonably sure they're not Langshans. Langshans should have willow-colored legs, not bright yellow. A lot of Langshans will have feathered feet as well, although there are particular varieties that don't (not too up on...
I now have two out and two pipped. Well, on is mostly out
I do have a problem though. The first one has what appears to be a slipped achilles. Any treatment advice?
Whenever they feel like it
Seriously, it's very hard to say. Last spring, I had a cockerel that started at about 5 weeks. It took him a couple days, but once he got the hang of it he was very proud of himself. So, he did incessantly just to show he could.
I have pressure treated boards in the coop and run. To date, I've never seen them peck at it. Unless, of course, there was food on it. They're not at all like goats or horses. They're not going to "chew" the wood.

Good morning biscuit; feels good doesn't it? [The pip, not the butter]
I didn't expect any action til tomorrow. Only one pip. Overachiever.
If you keep getting all buttered up, there's really no telling what might happen

Unfortunately, I DO NOT qualify.
Per the rules someone had to take a picture with the chick and I think the only person to do that is the one with the goose.
I would have, but I thought it was the first chick after the target time. Tomorrow at noon.

Haha! My hubby made it to all of his, too- even though they snipped, tied, clamped and cauterized, his doc says the human male body is a propagation machine designed not to be thwarted by modern medicine...2 out of every thousand men STILL heal back!!
I may be a lousy pregger lady...

I made sure after my second one was born I got S P A Y E D!
My hubby was nice enough to get neutered. He felt like 2 6-month bed-rests in 26 months and 14 combined months of vomiting constantly was plenty of discomfort for me. He figured a quarter-inch incision and a few days on...
