    Her comb isn't bright red!

Okay, so if all she want's to do is sit on eggs, she must be broody. But how would one go about "breaking" her of it as you say you need to do?

    Her comb isn't bright red!

I wouldn't know what "broody" is. I know she won't get off the eggs very often...........only to eat or drink what she has to. If that's "broody", then I guess she is. She's been this way for about 3 weeks now.

    Her comb isn't bright red!

I tried to do a search on this, but I never know what to ask the search engine to get an answer. So here goes. One of my hens has a comb that's not bright red.............like all the others. It's more a pale pink. She's not a real active participant in the flock and prefers to be the one on...

chicken (flock) behavior after an attack by a predator

Quote: I'm sorry for your loss. We sure do become attached to these little birds. I "failed" my hens by forgetting to close their coop one night. An opossum spent the night in one of the nests...........but not before it completely removed the tail feathers from one of my hens, bit into...

    "Wrinkled" yolks

The eggs were less than 3 days old....................and yes, they were refrigerated.

    "Wrinkled" yolks

That's what I sort of figured but........................it was 5 out of 5 eggs!

    "Wrinkled" yolks

The shells aren't as hard as they were when they first started laying................but I've heard that is to be expected. However, the easiest way to break them is to strike them with the back edge of a table knife..................so I wouldn't call them "thin".

    "Wrinkled" yolks

Surely some of you with years of experience with chickens can help me with this one.

    "Wrinkled" yolks

I broke open some eggs for breakfast today and the yolks were wrinkled, or sort of saggy. What causes that?

    Before, during, or after?

Well, I guess I'll just have to be happy with the cackling, no matter what it's purpose. I got 14 eggs today from my 14 hens, so they can cackle all they like!!!!!

    Before, during, or after?

Thanks..................yes, I'm cackling too! Thanks for the "flowers". I love what I do for a living. Not many can claim that.

    Before, during, or after?

I'm new to chickens. My first batch of hens are now 10 months old. Laying eggs like crazy (average a doz a day for 14 hens) and I'm loven' being around them...............or is it having them around me? But I've a question about cackling! I love to hear them cackle. Does a hen cackle to...

    Question about oyster shell

Don't think I'd ever have thought of cod liver oil or wheat germ. I try and give them the vegetable scraps daily..................is that too often?

    Question about oyster shell

I haven't tried black sunflower seeds, but I give them the salad and vegetable scraps from the meals we cook. They get raw vegetable scraps..............things like carrots, tomatoes, asparagus stalks, broccoli stems, green pepper scraps, etc. I've also bought them a few heads of cabbage to...

    Question about oyster shell

My hens are now 9 months old. I've 14 hens and since they started laying in December, they consistently produce an average of 1 doz eggs per day. When they first started laying, I (a "store egg" kinda guy) was surprised at how hard the shells were. Strong and thick...........so much so it...

    Blood spots

Thank you for the comments. The only thing I gleam from them is maybe the hens are still young yet. (7 months old) We have no rooster, so I know the eggs aren't fertile.........unless they are experiencing some sort of "other-worldly" conception. I am going to pursue the heat lamp...

    Blood spots

I'm new to this chicken farmin' thing. My 14 hens are dutifully providing me with a minimum of a dozen eggs a day. My girlfriend and I are in this together, and she's been selling them at work. One of her customers complained she'd had an egg with a blood spot that looked to be about a...

    Omg!!!!

Man, I must be treating my "girls" right! I've 14 hens and get 14 eggs almost every day!

Hey, That's what roos are for!!!!!

    Choice of breed for eggs?

I'm a newbie to all this chicken "stuff", but I've 14 hens..........a mixture of Barred Rock, Rhode Island Reds and Black Star. I can't positively tell you which ones are the best layers because I'm getting 14 eggs practically every day!!!!! (Never more than 14, and never less than 12 since...
