MPC ships chicks from Amish country, Ohio. My chicks were shipped out Tuesday (according to the DC# scan, they were first scanned at 7:30 pm) and they arrived at the post office here in Canton, CT around 11:00 AM Wednesday. My last shipment from them also came the day after it shipped.
there's nothing for straw on cl at all; that's what I am most in need of. there is one listing for hay that i have to email about - they didn't really give any info.
I've gotten chicks from Meyer, My Pet Chicken and efowl.com and have not had a problem at all. I am actually awaiting a call from my PO now to tell me to go pick up another round of chicks from My Pet Chicken.
Haven't checked in on here in a while!
If you're in northwestern CT, where are you getting your straw at a reasonable price? Preciously, I was only picking up a bale or so a year, so I didn't mind picking it up at the farm stand, but I'm needing to buy more of it now so I'd like a better...
We became chick farmers on Wednesday, April 13th, 2011, with a box full of 2 dozen assorted rainbow layers from Meyer Hatchery. After hours of forum threads, pics on facebook, googling and going through Meyer's entire catalog, I think we have the following:
Chick #1 - Appenzeller Spitzhauben...

I feel for you - my chickens are 6 months old and only 1 out of the bunch is laying. We call them our little freeloaders, lol. The one who *is8* laying just started to lay last week. The guineas are 2 full months younger and started laying first, lol.

They're 18 weeks now. The one laying the brown egg is doing just what you describe; the other one, not so much, lol. They are getting layer feed and oyster shell
They're only a few months old; they were definitely not laying prior to a couple of weeks ago. I may have to try the food coloring thing just to figure out who's laying what!
We have two guineas that are laying; one lays brown eggs, the other white eggs. I can't for the life of me figure out which is laying which eggs - one is a lavender and the other is a pearl - anyone know which would lay which egg? They both started laying, the brown egg layer about 2 weeks ago...
Very bummed - we lost our first chicken to predators yesterday. My 10 year old was putting them back in yesterday evening and found one chicken about a foot away from the fence with no head. My best guess is that something reached in through the fencing trying to grab something, and grabbed...
Not much compared to everyone else, but this is our current line up
4 ameracauna chicks
2 exchequer leghorn cockerals
19 assorted pullets
4 lavender guinea keets
3 pearl guinea keets
5 purple guinea keets
3 white guinea keets
2 angoras - one black female and 1 REW male
we're waiting on our...
Newchick - love the pic!
Tina - that post had me cracking up. Grounded for life - no worms for you!
No one ever warned me that guinea keets were soooo cute!!
Picked these little guys up this morning at the post office. They're so tiny, way tinier than the chicks.
The 4 ameracaunas...
We got some new babies this morning
These are my 4 ameracaunas that i had to order because we didn't get any in our rainbow layer assortment, lol. Because, you know, we need more than 21 chickens to supply eggs to 4 people They're so cute - and so much less noisy than 25 chicks!
I went with Giant Angoras. I bought directly from the breed originator. She lives in MA and is the one I talked to at CT Sheep & Wool. I went to MA Sheep & Wool specifically to buy from her. So I am now the proud owner of a REW buck (2 months old) and a black doe (4 months old). they look...

What plans does everyone have for the weekend? i am hoping to get the temp fence up for the temp chicken run today. we have to get the grass in the yard, barn area and pasture cut today seeing as though I found a rattlesnake in front of the barn door Thursday evening. I have to get the hutch...
They only need about 20 seconds, never mind 20 minutes, lol. I had my last doe separated from my buck and they bred through their cages, while both inside (their own cages). unless the males for some reason were uninterested, I am betting you will have a litter in about a month.
