WELCOME to the PARKS' ARK
My husband & I have a small farm in outside of Roy WA where we have a variety of critters - the newest & certainly one of the most interesting are the buff Orpington chickens we got last year. My husband nearly ran away from home when I said,"Honey, we should get some...
I also have lavenders - 10 babies that are "related" to yours. Mine are about a week old now, doing great w/their foster mom (an Orpington/WyandotteX).
It works if you don't have chicks - only for older birds, unless you line it with a wire that has smaller holes. Don't forget an animal-proof top...hawks, coons, etc....
Have fun!
OK - spring is here, and I need to get some new layers for next year. Would love to do this from my hens, but no one is broody
The splash hen went broody in December, so maybe she will start soon, but ... sheesh! Come on ladies chix, times a-wastin'!
TY all for your input
Actually both parents were blue Orpingtons - I didnt see this type of feathering on either one.
I got her (and 4 others) from a breeder here in WA state.
Yes, our water freezes on occaision as well. We empty the buckets, refill them with fresh & it takes awhile (hours) till they are froze again.
If you like, there are thermobuckets that are lined to reduce/prevent icing up. Check out a livestock/horse supply catalogue.
Farming in the winter...

Meat birds are usually butchered before they are a year old - so that is a good way to handle culls or extra birds - and then the best are bred and/or produce eggs.
I love my Orpingtons &...
Baytril is great - but it is Rx only from your vet.
We had both tablets (for dogs & cats), and a liquid compounded for cats/small animals.
It also comes in an injectible that we used for reptiles.
I wish you luck
I am very reluctant to put anything in my animals (or myself) if I don't know the ingredients.
What type of worms are you targeting? Or are you doing just broad-spectrum?
Bantybev;
you started my day off right! With a big laugh at myself & my husband (who does have building knowledge, but hates plans & organization!). We had a few "words" with each other, but it was mostly on building the predator-proof yard. Our coop is big - 8x10 - and now has exterior...
