Florida Lee...yes, our coops were probably designed for similar weather. I built it this summer at the beginning of our epic heat wave. The afternoons were 100+ when I was building it, which is why I decided not to close in the loft at the top. It was so hot in there, I couldn't imagine them...
We are finally dipping below freezing here in Texas and I have a question about sleeping arrangements. I have a combo coop/run. The whole structure is about 8x10. There is a 4x8 'loft' area where the hens roost at night and there nests are there as well. I have a roost on the opposite side that...
So I was reading the dosing instructions for tylan 50 for CDR. It said the give 1/2cc subcutaneously and 1/2cc in the breast. Why do you have to give it both muscularly and under the skin?
Just curious!
I noticed the black dots the other day and assumed it was mud (because we had gotten quite a bit of rain) but I noticed today that her eye is swollen. Any thoughts as to what it could be? I have some neo/poly b/bac ophthalmic ointment if that would be helpful.
thanks!
As far as the bio-security is concerned...couldn't you just buy her a pair of boots and maybe some kind of jumpsuit and ask her to change into it at your house before she goes out to tend to your flock? For the partnership, if it were me, since she already sells her eggs, I would let her sell...
I would want to have the light come on a couple hours before dawn and go off after the sun is up.
How would you hook up a time to a solar light if it doesn't already come with one?
Ok, I've seen people mention that they use various solar powered lights to add light to their coops to increase egg production. These light go on at dusk. Does anyone know of solar lights that have a timer that you can set the light to come on in the morning instead?
I'm in Dallas, and I believe we had 70+ days over 100. My hens did great. I really didn't do anything special for them. They had plenty of water and I purposefully located their coop in the shadiest place in the yard. I think something can be said for buying pullets from local breeders who have...
I'm in Dallas and I use H&H feed I believe it is 19% My girls have been laying splendidly and I am very happy with the feed. I've been buying it in Denton at D&L.
why don't you try a different feeder? I was having the same problem as you. The hens were billing out the dusty parts to get to their favorite seeds. I bought this feeder and I have not seen them billing out food anymore.

Squirrels will definitely eat chicken food! Although, my chickens try to catch the squirrels, so the squirrels have quit coming into the chicken run!
My hens having been laying for a little over a month. I have yet to change their nesting material because it doesn't seem to be soiled at all. Should I change it at regular intervals or just when it gets dirty?
