Is She a She? Our Coturnix Quail

Quote: Thats actually what my dad said when I asked him what to do. He said that if the liquid skin didnt work then I would have to stitch her head. I believe she will always have a little bump on her head because the skin kind of healed together but Not onto the head. lol I agree! I think...

    Possible Female?? Am I right?

not too sure if cinnamon and rosetta are the same thing where you come from (no such thing as cinnamon in NZ), but it looks like a rosetta to me, you can breed rosettas by putting a pharoah to a range (tibe). It's to do with a gene called extended brown that controls how far the darkest pigment...

    Diamond Doves anyone????

I have some young ones, my first ever. They like their fruit and veges as well as mixed seeds, and they have the cutest coos, like a toy train. Mine live with bengalese finches and canaries and button quail and are very easygoing so far but will watch out for those hormones!

What do you use for quail nesting boxes??

My coturnix don't care for nestboxes or enclosures at all, but for my buttons I use an upended 1 litre plastic yogurt container (Sorry me no do non metric measurements. A family sized pack not a single serve punnet. It has sort of a tapering shape with a square top and bottom) with panels cut...

Is She a She? Our Coturnix Quail

If she opens it up badly again you might consider stitches. I have had to do DIY stitches a couple times for injured birds when the vets were closed (why do animals get into trouble only when it is after hours?!!) and they are not hard to do, if you can sew enough to sew on a button you can...

The "are quail worth it" answer thread

mine definitely lay 300 eggs a year, trick is providing good food and at least 16 hours of light a day. I imagine some strains are better than others, my golds and pharoahs start laying a week or two ahead of the other colours for some reason even if they all hatch together.

    Antibiotics?

My understanding with coccidiostats is they are added to starter feeds at a subtherapeutic level so that chicks will get an infection of coccidiosis but be able to fight it off with the help of the coccidiostat. The thinking behind this is that it is a safe way to help the birds develop a...

    How many

I found a scientific article about this somewhere where they tested fertility etc of coturnix with different sized harems. Agree with JJMR, the article and I both find about 4 hens is right. It does depend a bit on the size of the roo and his general randiness. The more hens you can get away...

    Variety of coturnix not laying!

I have noticed that golds and pharoahs lay first, then whites and last of all tux and tibes. Not sure why this should be but it is very consistent with my birds over dozens of hatches. I'd give those dusky maidens a bit longer, as well as making sure they have the light, food etc they need.

    My baby quail keep dying...help

If something has gone wrong during incubation or hatching, or if the babies are genetically messed up, it often takes several days before they start to die. This is because they hatch with a food supply (yolk) in their tummies which can carry them over for a while, and so they don't die...

    Bobwhite/Coturnix Hybrid Quail

if you are a dab hand at AI you can do it more reliably than trying to get the two species together, I have had a researcher buy a lot of my coturnix eggs to investigate if there is a gene that makes it more likely to have a successful outcome. Given that using AI you can hybridize a chicken...

what brand of incubator do you recommend?

I have both a little giant and a hovabator. Although they are similar, the hovabator works better for me. An advantage the hova has over the lg is that the lg has a very low "tray" at the bottom and the baby quail tend to leap/fall out when you open it! The hova also seems to maintain its...

Texas A&M , Elglish White, Tuxedo, and ???

basically, texas A&M and other white birds share the same plumage colour genetics but true texas A&Ms are bred to have other physical characteristics such as high carcass weight and lighter meat

    A Bantam hen?

In my experience they have trouble turning the smaller eggs properly so they don't hatch out many. Also the babies go racing away from them at a young age and they can't keep them rounded up so lose a lot. Incubator and brooder all the way for me

    help with california quail housing

thanks guys. Still would love input from those with experience in keeping these fellas. In New Zealand they seem to often be kept in aviaries with other birds, which to me hardly seems ideal. Good tip about birds raised in big pens, I can imagine they would be incredibly jumpy!

Roo with partial scalped head....help! (graphic photo)

lowering the light levels will reduce aggression between males - however then you won't get eggs I'd be inclined to separate them, some males are real little homicidal maniacs

    help with california quail housing

hey guys I have a secret plan to present my better half with a pair of california quail for his birthday but obviously I wouldn't just buy birds with nowhere to put them! Now coturnix I know (all 300 of them we have currently...) but calis I am not sure about what would be the best accomodation...

My chick's leg appears broken at the knee. What should I do.

http://sites.google.com/a/larsencreek.com/chicken-orthopedics/leg-braces may be useful I think, without seeing it obviously so I can't really make a good judgement, that it's quite likely that it's a slipped tendon (perosis) not a broken leg, as a slipped tendon at the hock is relatively common...

Muscovy Ducklings & Story *PIC heavy!* Update 6/20

Watch out for the males when they get bigger - I have cayugas and muscovies too, and the poor cayuga girls are tormented by the lustful muscovy drakes. I keep my show cayugas penned well away from the scurvy scovy crew. On the plus side the great thing about poultry is if any of them give you...
