Is She a She? Our Coturnix Quail

What a shame that she won't let it heal. Lots of luck with step two. My female is doing fine. They both like it outside and they're getting along fine with my zebra finches. As far as I can tell she's healing but it will take time for her feathers to come back.

The Brooder is a short top. Its what I keep newly hatched chicks in. But I guess its not short enough.

I dont even know why she jumped like she did. : (

If she opens it up badly again you might consider stitches. I have had to do DIY stitches a couple times for injured birds when the vets were closed (why do animals get into trouble only when it is after hours?!!) and they are not hard to do, if you can sew enough to sew on a button you can cope. Sterilize the needle and thread with boiling water and go for your life. Coturnix are fantastic healers. The ones I have been forced to sew up all healed so you would never know, and they would have died had I not done it. The other thing you might try is lining the ceiling of her cage with bubblewrap. Goofy but effective.

Thats actually what my dad said when I asked him what to do. He said that if the liquid skin didnt work then I would have to stitch her head. I believe she will always have a little bump on her head because the skin kind of healed together but Not onto the head. lol

I agree! I think Aniamls wait until the Vets are closed and then they MUST test how far we would go for them. lol

Thank you!!

Thank you!!

if you haven't already, clip all the feathers around the wound to stop them sticking to it and having it heal over it, regardless of whether you stitch or not. NB stitches will only work with a fresh wound, after the wound has stopped bleeding for a few hours they are pretty ineffective. You could also use the type of adhesive bandages (I think they might be called butterflies?) that are sometimes used instead of stitches but unsure whether they would stick to a coturnix head with all the slinky smooth feathers. I understand in the US where I assume you are, there is a blue antiseptic cream that works miracles, might be useful.

Hello darfur, NZ a place I've always wanted to visit. I,m a UK transplant to the US. Have lived here 62 years now. Anyway, back to your suggestion about the blue cream. I use a spray called Blue Kote and it has gentian violet in it, hence the name blue I guess. I used it on my injured quail and she's done fine. If it's used you need to use gloves as your hands and clothes for that matter will turn blue. It does sound like it needs extra measures though, either by stitching or otherwise. Lots of luck Paaz1120. Hope she heals well.

Thank you All!!

Its funny because we tried to use a sticky bandage like butterflies but they wouldnt stick. I LIVE by Blue Kote!! : D
I actually used Liquid skin and so far it is holding up pretty well. Liquid Skin is like Stitches, they use it in the hospitals and such.

Fingures crossed for a good heal.

Thank you again!!
