This is the coop my Husband and I built for our chickens in 2010!
We built the coop floor to be raised from the ground by making a pipe frame and attaching poles to put in the ground. The floor is three layers so it is pretty thick. The space under the coop is now lined with lattice and...
Thank you for your support! So far every one is doing good! I will clean and disinfect everything just to keep the others healthy! Here is a pic of my pullet that passed. I think she was so pretty, and she got first place in the fair.
Thank you for letting me know about the coloring of the wattles and comb, I had thoughts about the possibility that she may have broken her neck or something, but where and how I found her didn't seem like she did. I guess she could have done that but it just seemed odd. She was laying in the...
I just found my buff orpington dead under our raised coop tonight. There didn't seem to be any sign of why she died. Her comb and wattles where dark blue to purple in color. I don't know if this is a normal thing for the coloring after death, or if this is a clue to what may have killed her...
I agree that silkies are a very calm breed and it would be a good starter for a 7 year old! I also like bantam cochins for kids. They are very nice too! I would say 4H would also be a great way to learn. It is how we did it for my kids! Good luck and if you still have questions when you get...
I also have about 100 pounds to lose. I have tried a lot of different ways to lose it and have not had much luck. The doctors always test for my thyroid and it always comes back normal. I have been doing a diet recently that is no carb, and no caffine and also no dairy! I lost three pounds...
I have recently added three sets of different ages together. I keep them apart until you know they are healthy, then I put them in a cage down low where everyone can see each other. I do that for up to two weeks then I put them out with the others. I think it has gone very well with very little...
I have a standard cochin that goes broody all the time! I broke her of one of the broods and then within a week or so she went into a very long brood I could not break her from. I don't think adding a roo is a problem. I only had hens for a year and now I have three roos. My main broody hen...
It sounds like they need some calcium, when my girls give me soft eggs I give them egg shells all crunched up and some oyster shells too! It fixes the problem. Good luck!

Thank you very much! I took her to fair just to see if she was a good specimine for what breed she is! She is my first BO so I had no idea if she would do well, but I thought she is pretty so it was worth a shot!
The first one is a black polish, the second one is with her back to us in the picture and she is a golden laced cochin bantam, the black and white one in the same pic. I'm not sure what she is, the last one is a belgin mille flure D'uccle!
We wash them in Woolite and in the rinse water put just a dash of vinegar, it makes sure the soap is off of the feathers so they don't clump together! We also dust them a week or so in advance for bug removal. We also scrub their feet and legs with a soft tooth brush to remove the gunk. You...

The ortho. used acrylic in my mouth and although it tastes awful it didn't stick to anything in my mouth! I think if you can buy acrylic for fake nails and put it on the bottom of her beak it might work for a little bit! Just remember for it to stick you will want to lightly sand...
I have one BO and she is three months old, https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/88240_dsc01128.jpg I think at eight weeks old to have that big and red of combs and wattles, my guess is boy! Sorry!
