Is anyone planning on going to or has been to the Silex Poultry Swap? It is coming up this Saturday Sept 8. I'm hoping to go and find some Buff Orps and some Silkies for my wife.
I've been thinking of going to the Silex Chicken Swap next Saturday and was wondering if anyone here has ever gone to it. I"m looking to pick up a few more Chickens for my flock since I lost some over the summer. Also my wife continues to remind me that she wants Silkies so I was hoping to find...
Perhaps that was an unfair statement on my part. I love BYC and though I don't post much I do read and learn a lot here. I do get annoyed with the internet the same as I do with the TV with all the adds/commercials being thrown at me all of the time. I do understand basic economics and that all...
Once at a auction a Polish Rooster came up for bid and no one bid on him so my wife felt sorry for him and thought he looked pitifully and at her prodding I bought him for a dollar. After keeping him separated from the girls for a couple of weeks we gradually introduced him to the flock. All was...
I'm glad you found some info. Because the tag/label is just a plain white sticker on the brown bag. The only other thing it says is Mix Composite and there is lot number on each bag.
A neighbor friend just gave me 3 bags @25KG each of chicken feed. Something called Novus, Next Enhance 500. The feed is in big paper bags with no other info on it.
Has anyone heard of this feed?
I put down pea gravel in combination with sand and that has worked out well. The soil never compacts down hard as the chickens are always scratching out new dust bathing spots.
I found this recipe on Foodnetwork.com and just made it yesterday. My wife and I both really liked it. We ate it with and on some sandwhiches that I made with some fresh deer sausage that I had also just made.
Spicy Slaw
Ingredients
1 head green cabbage, shredded
2 carrots, grated
1 red onion...
You still have to think of inclement weather. They will be spending more time in the coop than what you may initially think so you want to make it as accommodating for them as you can. I have thirteen chickens and they are all able to free range a good portion of the time but I still have birds...
Ventilation is definitely something to be concerned about. Judging by those photos there is not nearly enough ventilation. In addition to that my concern is there are no windows to allow natural light into the coop. It would be like keeping them in a cave!
Are your chickens allowed to freerange or are they kept in a secured run and coop?
If your run and coop are secured then you have nothing more to worry about than you would having a varmit getting into your own house. Most predator/animals come out at night so although there is some concern...
I took a deer during the deer hunting season here and I processed it at home leaving me left with the carcass. I just drug it back into the woods thinking that the varmits would just take care of it. I did not think that I would walk back there and find my chickens pecking away at it. They have...
Bribe them with treats! But you have to get them acustomed to you and receiving treats at times other than just when you are lock them up. Other wise they will only associate treats with the loss of freedom and will quit coming to you.
I took a nice buck opening weekend. Took it to a meat shop to have it processed out. I'm sure that my bill will be close to $200 when I get my meat back. They charge to skin it but they also have a charge if you skin it. Then there's a charge to cut it, a charge to grind any of it plus the...
Yesterday I finally broke down and shoveled some of the run as well as a path out. That was not good enough for the girls to come out so I went and got several clumps of straw. I put that down and was able to coax some of the girls out. Eventually the big man came out and then the other girls...

Woke up this morning to the sound of a plow truck going by. Looked out and saw that we had gotten three more inches of snow. This time it is more what we are used to around here. It will snow and then the sun comes out and melts it away. It is a beautiful day out today. The sun is shining and...
