    What animal did this?

I "had" 9 chickens. 1 roo and 8 hens. I went out the other morning to feed them & found two of them dead. Both girls had their bottom half of body chewed on & mostly gone. They were just laying on the ground. One definately fought back due to all the feathers on the ground. I have had coyotes...

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

My biggest problems have been with coyotes. Last fall in just one night I lost 4 chickens, 2 white-crested ducks, and my female bronze turkey. They had a feast. There were very few feathers and the only thing left behind was most of the turkey carcass.

Though YOU had a Predator!?? *GRAPHIC*

I am sending you an open invite to come and take care of my cat problem. I had two beautiful white crested ducks, Dick & Jane, two broad breasted bronz turkeys, Heathclif & Gertrude, plus 18 hens and one roo (chickens). I now have 13 hens. It had to have been a cat. In one night they took...

    Ducks okay to stay outside?

pardygwyn, thank you for the info. Today I purchased a heat thing to keep their kiddie pool from freezing. I didn't get back til late and it was already 17 degrees without figuring in the wind chill factor. My pipes underground froze so I have no water so they'll have to wait til tomorrow!!

    when can they go out

688peterl, just had to tell you that your ducks are beautiful! I have a pair of white crested ducks and they are so fun to watch. I worry about them being out in the cold. Mine are all grown up and feathered at 6 months old. Enjoy them while they are little as they do grow up so fast.

    Ducks okay to stay outside?

I know, it's a crazy questions especially since 'wild' ducks don't build duck houses!! This is the first year I have had ducks. I have a pair of white crested. They hang with my pair of bb-bronze turkeys and the four of them stay outside all the time. Their pool had some ice in it but they...

I lost a Scovy today... & it was horrible :'(

So very sorry for your loss. It seems like the cyotes and fox are getting one or two of my neighbors and my poultry every night lately. I guess there aren't enough field mice or bunnies to satisfy them. I found remains of one of my chickens each night for the past week. I realize it's the...

    Broody Red PULLET

I feel your frustration. I have a white silkie that is nearly broody all the time. Every day and sometimes more times a day if I cannot see her out with the other girls I take her out of the nesting box and out into the yard with the other girls. It's almost like a game to see who will win...

Carnage this morning - what was it? WARNING GRAPHIC PHOTO"S!!!!

Thanks to everyone who gave me ideas and told me it was a racoon. I thought it might be a coon but wasn't totally sure. Last night I put the turkeys in with the hens and put the ducks back into the 'babies' house. If I put wire on top and a tarp over the wire so when it does start to rain (and...

Carnage this morning - what was it? WARNING GRAPHIC PHOTO"S!!!!

I had purchased 4 turkeys and 2 ducks a couple months ago. Kept them inside a small bldg and figured it was time to let them out now. On saturday I put some kennel panels up, divided it in half with a reg panel and a gate panel to put turkeys in one side and the ducks in other. Sunday am...

    Turkey questions? A LOT :)

ohiofarmgirl wrote that ..."the BBW's and other 'commercial' breeds cant reproduce naturally" I beg to differ with that. I have a one year old bronze breasted hen and I took her to the local feed store where they have a pair. The tom took right after her and the poor girl was so beaten up...

Mamouth Bronze? Is this a broad breasted?

This is my 4th year for BBB's, two years ago I had a tom dress out at 35 lbs. I had to cut him in two he was so big. But he was so good tasting, just one breast was the size of one of my cornish-x's!! I can't stand to eat a Butterball or any other brand of turkey not 'home grown'.

    Turkey Hen not laying now

I took my hen to the local feed store to hopefully mate with their tom. I left her for 5 days. There was a lot of afternoon delight going on since the back of her head is all tore up. She had started laying in Dec '08 atleast 6 eggs a week. She has been home for 10 days and no eggs as of...

Hen not getting new feathers after molt

Wouldn't the other girls have it though? They free range together, take dirt baths in same place, lay in same nest box, etc. The other girls are just fine.

Hen not getting new feathers after molt

my br hen started molting in late March. She looks so sad now. She has not grown any new feathers on her chest and head. She looks really strange. She has started laying again but what can I do to help her? I started putting vitamins & electrolytes in the drinking water a month ago but no...

Am I doing something wrong here?

Game Bird feed? what made you use that instead of meat bird? Just curious as I have used Albers brand for meat birds. The feed store I use the owner is very knowledgable & is great to ask questions & even get answers.

I never knew raising meat chickens would be so stressful

I couldn't believe the price that was posted for processing the cornish-cross.... $2.85 each??? Here in Oregon we have a wonderful processor, birds are very clean when I get them... price tho is quite another thing. They charge by the pound above 8lbs birds cost $4.00 each. So I pay around...
