The chicks arrived Sept. 17/10. Six, day old, Lohmann hens - my first little flock since I was a kid. We live north of Peterborough, Ontario. The coop is finished, aside for a few details. The inside dimensions are 7' x 6.5' and 5.5' tall or so. There is one outside run, with roof, hardware...
Heated dog water bowl and plastic waterer set inside. So far this set-up has worked down to 5'F. The water stays cleaner and I don't have to replace it as often. We'll see how low the temperature can get before freeze up!
My girls were not using their roosts, training did not work (5 day attempt), and they were sleeping like this...
Now, after installing a roost along the window, 5 of 6 sleep with a view, and one has progressed to a higher roost all by herself...
I will never try to train a chicken again!
I have 7.5sq' per bird in the coop and initially thought I had room for more. Now, after being in operation for a bit, I don't feel I have room for more chickens and am very happy I started small. This is how I like to care for them, I'm sure more would fit and be healthy, but I like the way...
Yes, the regular plastic waterer just sits in the heated dog bowl. The coldest it's been so far is 10'F in the coop. There was ice in the top of the waterer, but still full of ice free drinking water. We will have to see....
Thanks for your comments. My birds will be well cared for (perhaps in a very different way from their brothers and sisters elsewhere). Here's to backyard chickens!!
I've been feeling guilty lately, after spending so much time on this site. We bought 6 lohmann chicks late summer, as that was all that was available around here that time of year (and my daughters and I couldn't wait once we got permission from husband). They're a brown chicken bred for high...
I have six girls and they get 1 cup or 2 of vegetables everyday. Tomato, lettuce, raspberries, green beans, or whatever is expiring in the fridge. It goes first before their feed. Its like salad with dinner .
Thanks for your comments. I've opened the door to let them free range, but there's no grass in site so they don't come out. I've seen 2 bird hawks the past couple days so I'm hesitant to let brown chickens run around in the white snow!
We've finished all our outstanding projects this weekend, although long overdue. Would love your comments or critiques!
Here is our run. We've added pvc plastic on the n/e side as it's the way the cold wind blows. I wanted it clear to see them from the house and to allow the little bit of...
Our situations sound very similar. Predator dense, old barn, sunlight, Ontario...here are some pics of mine built this year. I needed a tunnel to get a window for the coop, and the run is on the north side, but I do let them out mid-day for a couple hours when I can.
Good luck!
My run is about 5' x 24'. The hardware cloth is burried 18" and its roofed with recycled tin. Still needing to add roosts or things to jump and play on. The hay bales and pvc panels are still in the garage to give shelter for winter, although we just got our first 6" of snow!
Good luck!

Here's some I have going. Dried whole green peas (I over filled the container as I didn't realize how much they would swell). Because the seed has become active, the good stuff is made available to the sprout, the nutrients, fats and proteins become more available for digestion. For example...
