    Moving a setting hen?

Yes, I would move her to another location in her own box with eggs. She will most likely stay with the eggs as that is what she wants to do, hatch them. Good luck!

I am in the planning stages for Sept 2009, returning home to NM after two years in London. Looking at coop designs, breeds and lots of possibilities. Space is not an issue nor are materials. Built a large barn (36 x 54) last year and have enough left over to build several coops but one will...

    Broody Hens

Lots of people want them, we would rather not and would like to stop them from laying in the boxes all day. Sometimes there are even two in the same nesting box. So, what's the best way to change that innate behavior? Thanks.

Anybody else regret their initial coop design?

Yeah, sure. I bought an old wooden shed, built in the 1940's, 11 x 15 and transported it 119 miles from where it sat. That in itself was a project, especially unloading from my trailer and setting it on cement pillars. Should have documented with pics. I made a small entry, storage space...

    Roosters suddenly crowing nonstop

Don't count on it settling down. I think, like some people, they like to hear the sound of their achievement, or their own voice. We have two roos, one BCM, one Ameracuana and most often it seems like a contest, I can crow better than you. It comes in spurts, not all the time but there is...

    Keeping chickens without a coop

Ours free range all over our 6 acres, lots of bushes in different places but they seem to prefer just a few and they even fly over the fence to the neighbors thickets. However, they all come in at night on their own and some of them roost outside in an open front shed and one or two hide away...

R.I.P most of my coop R.I.P Cheepers 11/28/10

From another fellow New Mexican....take care and let us know how we might help...want some more chickens....a shotgun? Anything at all, just say the word. We've been lucky, no losses but have dogs, donkeys and fences plus coop fairly close to the house although that does not deter most...

Hi Anyone in NM know someone who has some Black Copper Marans they might be willing to sell? We have one pair and I would like some more BCM hens. We also have some Ameracaunas who just started laying. Do y'all still have that swap in East Mountains, Edgewood? Thanks.

    Caught in the Act

Yes, there is something you can do about it but it's probably not legal. In some states, livestock owners are within their rights to "destroy" predators....enough said. And if you've ever been involved in guerilla warfare, there are strategies and tactics that get the job done.

    I hate to interrupt but....

Uh, maybe get rid of the cast and get something else? There are usually options but seldom explored sufficiently, IMHO And in the meantime, unwrap a wire hanger, put some lambs wool soaked in alcohol on the sharp end and itch away!

    BEST chicken feed recipe, ever.

Dulse in many places is simply a synonym for sea weed but here's a run down for anyone interested: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-dulse-seaweed.htm I buy organic layer feed from Embudo Valley Organics here in New Mexico, about $29 for 50 lb. and here is a fairly complete list of sources...

My feed store in Espanola recommended Turkey Grow (Purina) for chicks. It has 20% protein and they seem to have thrived on it. They are now 2 months old and I plan to keep them on it for another couple of months unless someone has a better recommendation. It's more expensive than some other...

Converting a barn for our birds

Put the ladybugs in your garden, they love aphids. Or chickens might like them too, not sure about that. At any rate, ladybugs are as good as the straw, for different reasons. Straw also eventually makes good compost but it takes a long time to break down, longer than hay actually. And I...

    Chatters Anonymous

Jamie, I just returned from Chicago, on business, and ran into a big conference on aging at the Hyatt there. Also encountered a couple of people who specialize in Fall Prevention in the elderly, one was a dancer, the other an occupational therapist. Point is there's lots of info from the...

    Chatters Anonymous

Internal Server Error - guess that means it's not working. I wondered if it was shut down, not for maintenance, but because someone said something offensive, politically incorrect or just downright inappropriate. "Does it really matter? No, not really, grace is everywhere." (That's a line...

Coop building - not as easy as it looks

Interesting posts! Here's what I've done. Found an old shed on Craig's List, bought it and now have to transport it 110 miles. Since it is 11 x 15, it is too wide to be legal on the highway so have to get two permits, one for the city where it is, and one for the state. But I don't think I...
