Catbirds are so snoopy! They like to stick their beaks in everywhere. When we were building our coop/run the catbird would sit in the bushes and meow. When we would leave to get more supplies or water to drink, it would hop all over looking at what we had done. I wouldn't be surprised if it...
Thank you for your reply, Mountain Peeps! I think Buffy was egg bound. She passed a "covert egg" that I didn't find until I was cleaning up after she recovered. I think the warm soak helped her move it. I'm not sure about the seizure, but today she was back to 100% normal.
Thank you for...
I took the girls out this morning and Buffy stepped out of the coop and did this:
She just stands like this, head lowered, tail raised. She closes her eyes now and again. This is not normal for her at all. She's usually one of our most active and interactive hens.
What I know:
She went...
Oh, I'm so sad! I'm sorry for your loss. :( Man, they didn't look sickly, they just looked little. It's too bad you can't find out what it was. HUGS!!!
My RIR was the tiniest chick, she's still our smallest hen, but she's a consistent, every day layer. They look adorable and not sickly at all, they should be fine. It does look like down.
UGH, enough with the rain, already! My girls need wellies and raincoats. This winter was bad enough and now a week of cold rain? Mother nature has it out for us. Stay dry, MN peeps!!
Here's the story:
This was an awful winter in MN, it was so cold that our Australorp lost part of her comb from frostbite. In January my RIR and Buff Orp developed white comb tips that progressed down the RIR's comb. I was pretty sure that they were going to lose part of their combs, too...
We can only have hens in our area and we're only looking for one, so I guess I would be willing to take an older pullet. I'll have to ask my daughter. Thank you for your reply! I'll let you know if she agrees.
Does anyone have Swedish Flower Hen chicks? My daughter would like to add one to our flock. I know the difficulty of adding only one hen to a flock, but we only have 4 girls. My daughter will work with them to integrate her into the flock. I'm in the Elk River area.
Thanks!
It's not that expensive. I shop at Costco for oatmeal and the field greens are about $6 for a box that lasts about a week. The snacks (worms) are probably the most expensive stuff. I only feed those in the winter to help keep the girls warm. The BOSS and scratch are 50# bags, so I only buy...
I feed them Purina Layena crumbles mixed 50% with gamebird food because my girls have been feather picking. They get 1 handful of scratch, 1 handful of black oil sunflower seeds, and 1 handful of dried mealworms mixed together twice a day as a snack. I also give them a bunch of field greens...
Isn't this just getting to be too much? It was too much at the beginning of February, now it's the beginning of March and we're still in the same boat! It was -18 this morning. I opened the girls' coop up at 7am, they didn't come out until 9. The good thing is, the sun is so strong, it warms...
Y'know, it's funny, NPR did a test using regular store-bought eggs and backyard raised organic eggs. Nobody in the test could tell the difference. All of the eggs got positive reviews, the determining factor was based on how the egg was prepared more than where the egg came from. Personally...
OMG! This totally happened to me today. I usually go out to take care of the girls from our basement patio doors. Well, they're frozen shut with a 5' drift in front. I had to go out the garage, down a hill, and across our acre. The snow was mid-thigh. I fell twice while carrying a 10#...
