If you allow them to free range on that much acreage, you may never get eggs, there is no telling what is out there beating you to fresh eggs. I agree with the posters who said to leave them in for a day or two and see what you get. If you get eggs, I would suggest building them a run vs...
Thanks all for all the get well wishes and no, ramirezframing, you are not alone-at all!! I would rather have a chicken or other pet anyday over a standard gift...I love my pets-and that includes my chickens.
Thanks KYTinpusher, you are very wise, my dh actually told me the same thing, he was...
As many of you know, we have had so many issues with this order...first placed in October for 1st week of Nov delivery, then their system "ate" our order, the chicks were supposed to arrive Thanksgiving week so we cancelled out of town plans-and then they arrived the week after...
Well, when my hubby came home from work, I found out the whole story...my poor baby!!
He was living with an older woman where he was sent to live in a bachelor pen with his brother because she thought he was too big, but he wanted the girls so much he kept flying out and would then get...
I had surgery yesterday and on my way home from the hospital my husband asked me to stop by his work. I thought he just wanted to check on me.
I get there and he pulls a dog crate out of his truck...inside? A 2-1/2 month old Jersey Giant rooster!!! I was SO excited...he is GORGEOUS!! I had...
We switched ours at 16 & 18wks since our chicks were 2wks apart. They were having trouble getting the crumbles as they got bigger, so it was time to switch.
Also if you use medicated feed, you don't want to wait for an egg, you will want to switch prior to egg laying...some say it is OK to eat...
Our babies were multiple breeds(25 "rainbow layers," 12 "brown layers," and 13 "rare layers). I dont know if it was simply shipping stress or if it was some type of sickness that spread around to all the chicks...just sad regardless of the cause.
Well, the lone chick died as well :-(
Sad as it is, it was probably for the best considering what was potentially going on. As horrified as I was/am, all of this spreading to the kids other chicks would've been much worse.
Now Meyer says they won't have replacement chicks until the end of...
We lost 6 more and now have one lone chick :-(
I am considering putting her in with my motherly frizzle cochin, but fear if they have a sickness they will kill off my healthy chicks. She is only a few days old as opposed to the 4 & 5wk olds in with the frizzle. However, being a lone survivor...
awwww, what a great story!!
My vote is either RIR or production red(although that is not a heritage breed). She looks like our PRs, they are smaller and darker like Hope.
She looks like a sweet girl and Im sure she will bring you many years of happiness!! You are such a sweet person to care...
Im a mixed flock kind of gal myself, no way could I pick just one breed.
However, unless u are breeding them, there is no reason to have a single breed flock(unless that is what you want). You can even still breed your mixed flock, either have breeding pens or have barnyard mix babies.
I...
Our white frizzle cochin is just GORGEOUS, more than that though, she is trying to be "mom" already.
At 3wks she started trying to cover all the other chicks with her wings at night. By 4wks some of her "box mates" wouldnt have any of that and I was afraid she would get hurt(she was insistent...
I have ordered from Murray and Meyer both this fall and my feed store chicks come from Ideal.
My MMcM order was WONDERFUL!! We ordered 30 birds plus free exotic. We received 32 birds, we had 4 lost during shipping and 3 more that were weak. I called and they sent 10 replacement birds plus 7 EE...
happybooker1-thanks for the well wishes and hugs, we sure do need them!! Its been a rough 2days with chicks!
Well, we are now down to 7 chicks, 3 "healthy"(or so they seem) and 4 that stumble around.
Called Meyer, they told me I have to call back tomorrow for replacements as we aren't yet...
Yesterday we get a call from the Shreveport post office(over 1hr away) saying that we might want to pick up our chicks...never a good sign. All other chicks have been brought to our local post office for pick up.
Upon receiving the box, it felt damp. There were 16 dead chicks out of 52(one...
Plastic rubbermaid/sterelite boxes work the best, my chicks like to spill water(regardless of the container used) and they poop which will also go right through the cardboard. We have a cardboard "sick box" for any babies that need extra attention, we have to replace the box every 3-4 days due...
Well, now instead of October or Thanksgiving week, my chicks have been pushed back yet another week. I was all set up for my chick arrival, checking the post office daily all week and despite all of my chicks showing "available" this week, no chicks. We will see what happens next week, maybe we...
Well, I will be getting Meyer chicks later this week due to a lack of MMcM availability, I can tell you that the customer service at Meyer is not as good, I can't speak for the quality of the birds yet as they have not arrived, but I can let you know later in the week how they compare as I will...
I am extremely happy with the chicks we received from Murray McMurray and they have availability in Jan/Feb of most breeds.
Sorry for your loss and I hope that you are able to find what you need to help fill the void!! It always seems to be our favorite chicken that is lost to predators and such.
Thank you for the responses!
Like I said, it may be wishful thinking, but two look/act like hens and only two have defined 3-part combs as of now, so maybe its not just wishful thinking-WHOO HOOO(y'all just made my day!!). 3, maybe 4 Roos I could keep(we have 35 hens and 2 roos now-full...
