    Beltsville Small White Turkey

If you have birds from McMurray or any other hatchery you likely have Midget Whites. Murray McMurray does NOT have authentic Beltsville. They falsely mislabel what they have which are Midget Whites NOT Beltsville. There are no commercial scale hatcheries with access to authentic Beltsvilles...

    Freedom Ranger parents

I believe you can do this too. Plenty have developed standard breeds even before international corporations with labratories existed. Why not take a good thing and work it backwards? It takes 7-10 generations to de-hybridize and stabilize. It's a lot of work over many years but if a lot of...

    Freedom Ranger parents

It is not a typical breed x breed hybrid. It is more like 4 family lines that are perfected so that when they are crossed twice will produce a "nick" that makes that generation have a certain hybrid vigor trait like rate of growth or muscle conformation. They are a patented hybrid broiler much...

BIO SECURITY Do I worry too much? Or should we all do more?

Quote: Keep in mind that some vaccines (ILT for example) may render your birds contageous for life. Sprays and drops are LIVE DISEASES. If you choose to vaccinate you will have to take precautions so you and your birds do not infect other peoples' flocks. You will have to strictly...

BIO SECURITY Do I worry too much? Or should we all do more?

Sometimes we all can get worried about the animals we care for. Sometimes it can be more about our needs than it is about them. Poultry are hardy creatures if we let them be. They are livestock animals that exist in the wild in many places of the world and do just fine without any human help...

Frozen waterer, no electricity in my coop...

Quote: Instead of the heating pad use fish aquarium heaters. I use these in my bucket waterers and they work great, also very safe and cheap to run. Get the submersible ones and use the lowest setting. If you can't get power out there a solar air bubbler might work. They make them for...

    Turkeys For Meat?

Quote: There is one turkey breed perfect for your needs. Imagine a small version of a broad breasted meat turkey, white feathered for a clean skin, not a hybrid nor hatchery produced, mates naturally and BREEDS TRUE. Compactly built, higher flesh to bone ratio than standard heritage...

overrun with mice in chicken pens

Since this is in the turkey forum, do you have turkeys? My turkeys kill mice all the time. More so than chickens. In fact my turkeys will kill any small furry or feathery thing including chicks that wander too far from moma hen.

    Bresse Chickens

I think it is great that you are working with the Bresse and making them available. Also good to know you cull, even with these very rare flocks. As all responsible breeders know “A good mob is produced by what you cull, not what you keep.” It's often very tempting to retain for the sake of...

    Chantecler Thread!

Quote: The original Chantecler which is the White Chantecler is very rare and is not available from any hatchery at this time. Partridge Chantecler began as a separate breed but was eventual lumped in with the original chantecler based on its similarity to it. Red and buff are further...

    Mealworm farming

Has anyone roasted or dehydrated to preserve them? I seen an article that freezing for 15-20 minutes will kill them and they you can slowly roast in an outside grill. I imagine a dehydrator would work, outside of course. If I decide to farm them, I'd probably try to store them dried like...

Heating a coop in bitter North Dakota winter

We live in Upper Michigan. Sometimes up to -20 degrees. Mostly single digits and a little below at night. No one here insulates or heats. Chickens go about their business completely unaware of the cold. They do not register discomfort the way we do. Like other wild birds that do not migrate...

    Chantecler Thread!

Quote: I've been trying to get whites for the last few years too. Last spring I did manage to hatch a pair from a few eggs all the way from Quebec (old lines stock) and then I got lucky and found a breeding pair from Sand Hill stock and Ontario Stock. I can't wait to start building my flock...

Need help troubleshooting bad hatch rates from shipped eggs

Quote: After hatches I disassemble and soak the turner trays, pans etc. in bleach water. I wash the inside down with disinfectant too. I allow the whole thing to air dry completely. I haven't thought about air cells though. I'll have to keep that in mind.

How long should you let shipped eggs rest before incubating

Yes, fan and autoturner. The only thing I can't be 100% sure of is the accuracy of the hygrometer since I don't know how to test this. All thermometers read a steady 100 degrees. Humidity reads 35% with water added every other day to two. I've also tried letting the humidity go too. Water...

Need help troubleshooting bad hatch rates from shipped eggs

Love my Critters! : I wish I could help. I have the exact same problem. I had one batch that was a 0% hatch and my latest one, I had 4 develop and hatch out of 24 eggs! I'm worried that the shipping is too hard on them, although there is no way of knowing if all the eggs I have received were...

How long should you let shipped eggs rest before incubating

Any one here use the 1588 hovabator? Just asking because my hatch rate from shipped eggs is terrible. I've never gotten more than 4 out of 12-18 eggs. And I did wait 24 hours before putting them in a pre-heated incubator.
