    HUGE balloon under her belly!

My barred rock has a huge balloon under her belly! At first I thought she was egg bound but when I gently felt around it didn't seem hard, but squishy inside. So I did some research and found that she most likely has ascites. I promptly went to drain her and found what I was sucking out was dark...

    Unusual Hen Behavior

I guess there were some eggs in the nest box. I will check on her later and see if she acts differently without the eggs. I was actually thinking that I've only seen her act that way while in the box. Thanks for the reminder! I wish!! I'm in the city and I'm only allowed three hens.

    Unusual Hen Behavior

Today I was out to see my girlies and my buff Orpington was acting really strange. She was all fluffed up and kept "growling" at different things. She would "growl" if the other hens were rushing to her. I was out giving them some greens and whenever she got a piece the others wanted she would...

    What gender, I hope female?

I'm not familiar with silkies, but I think that if you're positive the other ones are male then it's most likely these ones are female or you would have been able to tell with the other ones.

Mamma hen of 8 chicks killed!!! Need advice

I would seperate the chicks until they're maybe almost the size of the adults. That way they won't be so small to be picked on. Also with going to the coop at night you can make a little area to the side, big enough that they can't get pecked at through the wire, and keep them there a couple of...

    Questions about using sand

I'm sure if you add it to their coop, it will become their own style! Thanks for your experience!

    Questions about using sand

Thanks guys!! Just as a recap: you can use the cheap peel and stick vinyl and you can use sand play sand. Not necessarily the river sand. Do you have the vinyl up on the wall a little ways too or is it just on the floor? And does the vinyl have strong enough glue to stick onto the wood? I'm also...

    Questions about using sand

Thanks for the info! How does the sand in your run do in the winter? Does it get packed down from all of the water? I'm glad you brought up using hay because I used straw last winter and it was a mess! I have a lot of questions now. I hope you don't mind.

    Questions about using sand

I want to use sand in my coop, but I have a few questions. Since it drains really well, will all of the moisture soak into my wood floor? And if it does what can I put on top of the floor between the wood and sand? And how much would I need for a 4×4 coop? I've also heard about people using...

    Putting my chicks outside

Hi! I have almost exactly the same chickens as yours (only 3) except I have a Leghorn instead of an Easter Egger. I had them out at six weeks and they did fine.

I have a buff orpington and she is amazing. She's one year old but she layed all through last winter. Welcome to BYC!

    Discoloration in the comb

Any help is appreciated. I saw avian pox in another thread so I don't think it's that. I'll keep an eye on her and hopefully it's just an after winter thing. Thanks!

    Discoloration in the comb

It was a little tender during the winter, but lately it's been in the lower 90s and higher 80's. I have been busy lately so it could have been there a while too.
