    Baffled by Sudden Death

    I found "Big Red" dead in the coop. She was only 4 yrs old. It looks like she laid an egg, got out of the nesting box and died. Is it possible she had a heart attack? I am baffled as this hen seemed very healthy.

    AHH! How to keep the chickens from eating my hostas?

    Right now, I don't let the girls out without supervision and a straw broom! Unfortunately, unless you put a fence around EVERYTHING, they are going to beat up vegetation. A good swat with the straw broom on their fluffy fannies sends them squawking and running in the opposite direction!

    WoW! Those coops are beautiful. We don't have those kind of carpentry skills. Our coop basically looks like a dog house ... we have only 4 hens. When you're finished, be sure to post a pitcure. Good Luck!

    If your Dad comes over to visit often and observes the chickens, he will begin to notice their individual personalities. After awhile, he will come to realize your chickens are pets. Yes, they give you eggs. Yes, they give you meat (sad harvest day) Yes, they bring you joy and provide entertainment.

    Where to put the food?

    The only critter I've found in the run is a dead mouse that was pecked to death! Our run is completely enclosed - sides and top - pretty much critter resistant!

    What goes in ... must come out. Chickens are fast poopers. The consistency and color will change depending on what they've been ingesting. In regard to letting your chick roost on your head ... well ... I think I'll zip my lips on that one!

    BBQ: Don't worry. Your chicks will "get it" when they get it. It's really not important. As stated earlier, they mostly just play on it for a month or so.

    Where to put the food?

    My run is covered ... food stays in the run. Coop opens into run ... pop door is always open. The girls go into the run if they're hungry or thirsty. The only food I put in the coop is black sun flower seeds so they'll scratch up the litter. I use the deep method.

    How important is it to have the run completely enclosed?

    @Cheryl Yes! Yes! Yes! The corrugated clear plastic works wonders for keeping the pen dry and the light in! At first I was concerned about air flow, however; the sides are open and the breeze just zips on through! The only issue I have with the plastic is ... snow, ice and water accumulation.

    What do you guys do with feeders at night?

    Feeder and waterer stay out in an enclosed pen. The coop is in the pen, the pop door stays open, the ladies come and go as they please.
