    December hatch along

Yes, that's why it's definitely out of one of the two NN hens I mentioned :D None of the EE's are standardized colors.

    December hatch along

...out of the hatch total, but the blue color was a surprise! It's out of either a buff Columbian or BBRXGold Spangled NN hen, crossed with what I am *thinking* is one of my EE roos, because my other roos are Welsummers, Penedesencas, and Asian Blacks. It *could* be the Asian Black technically...

5 week old Partridge Cochin looks off to me

I am probably paranoid, but I just don't feel like my two Partridge Cochin chicks are developing much of a "Cochin" look...do they look like they are supposed to? The foot feathering is so sparse!

    December hatch along

My december hatch resulted in 15 chicks out of 22 eggs incubated. I was testing out a new incubator so they're just a mix of my layers, but a few of them came out really pretty!

    Nurture Right 360 Incubator Okay?

I hatched out of this kind of incubator for the first time this month, with the chicks arriving a couple days ago! I got 15 chicks out of 22 eggs. One chick has a small foot deformity I'm inclined to blame on the auto-turner not flipping that egg...but then again, 14 chicks hatched out...

My new pullets from Hoovers (amberlink) and Hoovers/Tractor Supply (Sapphire Gem)

I just ordered 10 Salmon Faverolles the same way. They arrived today with two dead inbox, but that still left me 9 due to an extra. A couple aren't looking great but I told myself when I ordered them that I would be happy if six of them made it, considering they had to go all the way to Florida...

    Helping Muscovy ducks go broody

...Do they like specific nesting supplies? I was hoping they were old enough to go broody this year, but it didn't happen. They'd only been laying a 2-3 months before the cold kicked in. They'll be over one year by the time Spring hits though so I'm thinking instincts *should* begin kicking in.

Best hatchery to order chicks from?

I ordered from Ideal last Spring, I'm in Florida, so it was a Texas-to-Florida route. Chicks left Wednesday,, middle of the day, arrived on Friday 7am healthy and all members accounted for. The South overall tends to be warmer and I like the idea of chicks moving across the southern states...

What are your five favorite breeds and why

...with other birds. Plus I like the little bit of "uncommon" they still carry, although I do believe they're growing steadily in popularity. This is *probably* the breed I will end up breeding/raising if I can find quality stock this coming year. 2. Penedesenca - I have had two roosters for...

Vote on chickens I should take to show -it's for experience, they're all "bad" but I would love help

I think I have misrepresented myself! Even at the pinnacle of "success" I have no designs on going to out of state poultry shows EVER...just showing locally, a breed I LIKE (not a breed I pick to be successful in shows with) with decent-quality birds, when the local shows come around. Having...

Vote on chickens I should take to show -it's for experience, they're all "bad" but I would love help

The Sunshine Classic only has classes of Large Fowl or Bantam. The State Fair does Best of Breed, and Layer, and then best of classes.

Vote on chickens I should take to show -it's for experience, they're all "bad" but I would love help

Thanks! I did try with the standards, and that is how I narrowed it down to these guys...the problem becomes I am just too inexperienced to differentiate "moderately feathered shanks" from "tightly feathered" and/or what it means when it specifies "defined thighs" :p

Vote on chickens I should take to show -it's for experience, they're all "bad" but I would love help

PLEASE don't send hate my way if I am breaking some purist poultry show-er law:bow. I have no fantasies of grandeur. Just a chicken girl trying to step up her poultry game a little ;) Disclaimer done...here goes: I am entering a few of my chickens in two shows in Florida this January/February. I...

    Naked Neck egg color project

Thanks for this! I haven't purchased the white egg stock yet, I'll make sure to choose a heavier, more dual-purpose friendly white egg layer rather than the leghorn.

    November hatch along, anyone?

I'll be incubating eggs from my flock! They go in this weekend.

    Naked Neck egg color project

Just for my own purposes (because I love the NN look) I am working on breeding chickens with the NN gene that reliable lay white, blue/green, and brown eggs. So obviously the brown is already their typical egg color but... To get white and green/blue egg laying chickens that also carry the naked...

    Breed and Chick Hardiness

Disease simply doesn't make sense, given that whole batches of the other breeds are thriving with no symptoms. I suppose it could have been a shipping issue - if one breed was in a box that got tossed around more, etc. I hadn't thought of that. I have done some research and Japanese Bantams are...

    Breed and Chick Hardiness

What is your experience with whether breed affects chick health, vitality, and tendency to thrive/fail to thrive? While i know there are a multitude of factors aside from breed, I was hoping for input on that specific topic... I'm raising a batch of Rural King chicks, and my single Sebright,the...
