Silkie and easter egger. Same age. Mixed of each under plate and not.
odd thing is, normal during day. only at night when colder do they go in corner. i will lower temp on heat plate to rest
I lost 3 chicks to trampling last night. They are not hot... half under heat plate. Other half fight to be in corner for some odd reason.

I am positive this bird is female, as she has laid eggs previously. No eggs anymore though.
I appreciate your response. My question is: does becoming a 'protector' mean the hen has to give up egg production?
Good to know. Typically, when female acts as the 'protector' due to no male...
I thought a hen being broody was also natural, and people often "fix" it by breaking her. I was wanting to check to see if I could feed her more of something to rebalance her hormones. I am not trying to subvert natural tendencies, just want my sweet hen back. :)
The bird is 8 & 1/2 months old...
Howdy.
I may have a hen that suffers from Gender Dysphoria Disorder. I want to try to increase her estrogen levels to see if that fixes her transgender desires. I recently rehomed a rooster and she may feel the need to fill his place.
Any natural remedies to this? i.e. a veggie? Any pre-fab...
Howdy. I got a heating pad to do the mamas heating pad method. But, I am struggling to find out how to prop it up securely to make a cave.. I do not have any wiring I can use. Any tips?
Ok thanks. He or she doesn’t stand tall... always low to ground like my hens. I can keep him as long as he or she don’t crow! I love that chicken. Just drives me crazy not to know.
Thanks. I agree, very likely. Is it possible for roosters not to crow? I rehomed 2 roosters 4 months ago. Maybe he hasn’t “assumed their place”? This one is skittish.. not dominant.
Is it possible for it to be a roo if it doesn’t crow? I think it could be roo too... but it doesn’t crow. My hen is louder. My hen doesn’t have all that stuff on neck or beak though. This possible roo is very skittish. Not Dominant.
Can anyone help me determine the gender of this Silkie. My other silkie, same age, is laying eggs. This one has not laid eggs.
I have attached photos.
Thanks!
Slightly off topic, but I loved your article on coffee grounds in the coop. I currently use hemp but this sounds like a much cheaper alternative. May have to consider.
Hi! Hope you are doing well. My chickens do occasionally dust bathe in the sand. My run is raised above the ground so it has good drainage and the sand is almost always dry. BUT, my chickens much prefer the mulch. Hope this helps. :)
@babyblubbs - my silkies LOVE their hemp bedding... odor free. I have sand in their run so I can clean with litter shovel but they also like to dust-bathe in my mulch beds when free-ranging.
