Thanks for all the replies. The birds are about 5 weeks old. I'll try to get some better pics, but those little guys are quick.
I have two chicks that look like the first one. One is slightly bigger than the other, both have a pea comb like an EE cockerel, but neither have a beard or green...
When my 40+ pound dog killed my chickens, he made a perfectly round hole in the middle of the chicken wire. It was still attached on all four sides to the wooden frame of the run. Now whether he bit through it or ran through it, no one knows. We weren't home at the time. All I know is that I...
Earlier this year, I placed an order through Cackle to be delivered to the local mill where I buy my feed. All was good except they sent me silkies instead of cochins. No problem. They sent the cochins with the next order. Of course, they send me an extra one and then added another 6 packing...
I'm gonna go out on the limb and say that I think the cochin is a pullet. I don't see much in the way of comb or wattles. I have bantams younger than yours and the males all have prominent, red comb and wattles.
I'm stumped on the other two. Sorry.
BTW,
Denise
I lost 5 chickens in two separate coops to my own dog. He attempted to get at chickens in the third coop, but what saved them is that one had hardware cloth in addition to chicken wire. It was an expensive and painful lesson.
You know how dogs learn to recognize the sound of their owner's car? My chickens do, too.
When I drive up the driveway, my BR rooster Travis and his girls run at full gallop directly at my truck. They know I'll stop to avoid running over them. When I get out of the truck, they lead me over to...
That happened to me, too. I have a 3 yo BR rooster who was raised with a EE roo. The EE was dead last in the pecking order and never presented a challenge to anyone. One day we came home and everything had changed. The EE roo was in charge. The problem was the hens still wanted to hang out with...
I'm hoping to get some help from one of my fellow ETN chicken fanatics.
I work for a newspaper in Morristown and was assigned to write the cover story for our monthly Wink magazine. I've talked about my chickens so much the publisher thought it might be a cool story because chickens seem to be...
I found my third dead chick this morning. It's getting frustrated because the 10 BR in the other brooder are doing fine. I checked last night and think I've gotten ahead of the pasty butt issue . These little guys just seem much more insubstantial than any other chicks I've had.
When I picked...
I moved the silkies to another brooder Saturday morning because they seemed cold in the larger brooder. They just kept huddled together. Already they seem more active.
I already have 2 anti-social hens who don't think they're supposed to associate with chickens. I'm gonna end up with a bunch...
To avoid having to pay shipping charges or worrying about picking up chicks from the post office, I ordered 10 barred rock chicks and 10 black bantam cochins from my local feed mill. They ordered from Cackle.
When I picked got my chicks home and looked at them closely, I realized my bantam...
This is sort of off-topic, but not quite. I just got back from our local beekeepers association meeting. We're in the process of ordering bees for our club for spring. It seems the apiary we use is booked up through April.
Anyone hoping to start with bees next spring might want to look into...
I've lost track of how many hens I've had go broody this year, including two of my BR hens who don't know they're supposed to go broody. I have one hen who's been sitting on eggs for the past month or so. I finally gave in and put some bantam cochin eggs under her, which this year has been the...
Darn, I'm going to have to miss this one.
DH teaches has a large craft show in Murphy, N.C. that week and we can't miss it. It's generally his biggest show of the year. Have fun.
I initially separated them for two reasons. The first is the one chick that looked like it had been trampled. I wanted to protect the surviving two. Also, I have another broody in the same coop and she's sitting on eggs. In fact, she moved into the nest box with the first broody the day before...
After fighting with my incubator for months, just when I finish incubating for a while, I had a bunch of hens decide to go broody.
The first of them hatched out three babies last week. One was hurt and died. I assume either trampled by mom or other chickens in the pen. I took the two...
I've decided to keep these three from my Feb. hatch. I would appreciate suggestions on whether you think these are girls or boys.
I think this EE is a girl:
I think this one is a boy:
Not sure about this BO-cross chick. I never did figure out what breed the daddy was, either:
I have a...
