    Bumblefoot

When they have bumblefoot and the let looks like that the infection could have gone into the leg. I know because Monday we had to put one of our beloved hens, Forest, down because a bumblefoot that I treated twice got so infected that it moved into her toes then up her leg. We took her to the...

Silly question on breed a hen

I guess I should of said I know there is a need for a rooster LOL but we can't have a rooster where we live. Is it possible, like a dog, to take a hen to a rooster for, for lack of a better word, for stud service? Heidi - who believe it or not knows the birds and the bees

Silly question on breed a hen

We have two hens that we would LOVE to have chicks from. I'm all too familiar with breeding AKC dogs but I don't know the first thing about getting chicks from our two favorite hens. We bought them as Americauna's (?) but the more we have researched we believe they are EE'rs. That isn't the...

My Anna won't eat chicken feed?

Chickens Really, meaning? Don't let her out to free range when we let the other out and keep her locked up? She has already lost 1/2 of her weight since the end of Aug and she can't really afford to lose much more.

My Anna won't eat chicken feed?

She has a lot of out door ground to cover and we let them out for 2-3 hours a day. We have tried doing that and she will dab at it but really won't eat it, just pecks at it. She is all over our back yard when we let her and the rest of the girls out, we have a half acre so they have a nice size...

My Anna won't eat chicken feed?

Her crop is empty in the morning. The mice she ate were alive before she got them so that isn't a problem there. The reason we are giving her so much extra is because she is now under 3 lbs and weighs nothing when you pick her up, we are scared to death of losing her. We will try adding some...

My Anna won't eat chicken feed?

I started a post about her losing 1/2 her weight. We have been watching her and haven't seen her eat any of her chicken feed. We thought maybe she didn't like the Layena any more so we went and bought a couple different types of food, Organic and Flock Raiser. She won't eat either of these...

My Anna is 1/2 her weight

Ok, We found some Ivermectin and wormed her and we will do the rest of our girls later this evening. We also found some Nutri-Drench and gave that to her. One thing we have noticed with her being in the green house is she is NOT eating her chicken food! We have been feed our girls Purina...

My Anna is 1/2 her weight

Umm, I don't remember if we wormed them we brought them home or not, (my memory isn't good with the meds I'm on) and she is almost 2. What would we buy to worm them? I have TSC and a Pet Headquarters that carries some chicken supplies. I'll order something if I have to. She spent yesterday...

My Anna is 1/2 her weight

Thank you, we are doing anything and everything we can think of to keep food in her because she is so light! She is so deceiving to look at, she look great until you pick her up then she is nothing but bones. If you think of something else after looking at her let me know. She has a lot of...

My Anna is 1/2 her weight

On August 28th we weighed all of our girls and in grams Anna weighed in at 2270g. She looked like she was starting to molt as she had some feather that need to be replaced. Most of the time we don't need to pick up our girls when we put them up at night as we bait them and they all just go...

Scalpel or punch for Bumblefoot treatment

Ok, I have attempted surgery on several of our girls and it has worked on most of them. But a couple of them I am not getting deep enough or getting all the infection out and we had to take two girls to the vet yesterday. Can you say ouch, our bill was over $323 I don't know if I am afraid to...

    Bumblefoot or something else?

...care of. Sadly I've had to do surgery on one of my girls twice because you think you get it all and you don't. The last time I did I told hubby *if* I didn't get it that time she would be going to the vet as I refused to open her foot up a third time. It is amazing how much gunk you can...

What treat did your chickies get today?

Last night ours got white rice. I wasn't outside when daddy put it down but when I walked out a couple minutes later it was picked up, I asked why he said "they were eating such large mouth fulls I was afraid they would chock!" LOL After they spent their 2.5 hours our chasing bugs we gave them...

What do you keep in an Emergency Kit

Thank you! Is there a time table that you should worm your chickens? We have bought all of ours at about 2-3 days old except our buff and they were about 5 months old when we got them. We have never wormed any of them. I know for a fact there have never been chickens on this property because...

What do you keep in an Emergency Kit

I want to make sure I have what I need in case something happens to one of our girls. Currently in our kit we have Vet wrap, white gauze, sharp scissors, tweezers for taking care of wrapping. As for wound care we have Vetericyn (the dog eye wash) Silver Sulfadiazine, Pick No More, Vet Rx...

    Bumblefoot or something else?

I'm glad that link is useful for you. I really hope someone can take care of it because bumblefoot can be very dangerous for the chickens to the point it can maim or kill them. When they are not walking it has become very serious. Let us know how it works out for her!

Did I get it all? or do chickens scab?

@Wyrop Rock, Yes, I got the plug (top photo ) out of her foot on Aug. 28. The bottom photo is tonight, Sept. 16. So yes, that is what I was afraid of Can you tell me how much of the pain medication to give her before I have to cut into her foot again. She is SUCH a good girl about it but I...
